Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear vetoed a ban on medical interventions meant to transition minors. Senate Bill 150, which would have protected children from medical interventions like puberty blockers and surgeries meant to change their sex, was vetoed by Gov. Beshear last week. The bill also would have prevented teachers from sexual orientation or gender identity. He explained his opposition to the legislation, citing the high suicide rate among youth who identify as transgender and remarking. “My faith teaches me that all children are children of God and Senate Bill 150 will endanger the children of Kentucky.” Sean Southard, a spokesman for the Kentucky GOP, slammed Beshear, charging “Andy Beshear thinks it’s okay for children to have access to life-altering sex change surgery and drugs before they turn 18.” The bill was originally passed with high enough margins to overturn a veto. It passed in the State Senate by a vote of 30 to 7, while the House voted in favor … [Read more...] about Kentucky Gov. Vetoes Ban on Medical Transitioning of Minors

Another powerful Pacific storm knocks on California’s door
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — A powerful weather system originating in the Gulf of Alaska pushed into Northern California on Tuesday, bringing more wind, rain and snow to a state battered by months of storms. Forecasters warned of heavy snow in the coastal mountains and the Sierra Nevada, where accumulations of up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) were possible. An avalanche warning was issued for the greater Lake Tahoe area. The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to pull a plume of Pacific moisture into California as it tracked south, but the rainfall was not expected to be as intense as the atmospheric rivers that impacted the state in recent weeks. After a dozen previous atmospheric rivers and blizzards fueled by arctic air, the water content of California's Sierra Nevada snowpack is more than double normal overall, and nearly triple in the southern Sierra. Damage since … [Read more...] about Another powerful Pacific storm knocks on California’s door
‘Nature gave us a lifeline:’ Southern California refills largest reservoir after wet winter
LOS ANGELES — Following a series of winter storms that eased drought conditions across the state, Southern Californians celebrated a sight nobody has seen for several punishing years: water rushing into Diamond Valley Lake. The massive reservoir — the largest in Southern California — was considerably drained during the state's driest three years on record , with nearly half of the lake's supply used to bolster minuscule allocations from state water providers. But an extraordinarily wet winter allowed officials from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to turn on the taps in Hemet once again. Water transported from Northern California roared out of huge concrete valves Monday and into the blue lake at 600 cubic feet per second — marking an incredible turnaround for a region that only months ago had barely enough supplies to meet the health and safety needs of 6 million people. "Nature gave us a lifeline in the face of climate whiplash," said Adel … [Read more...] about ‘Nature gave us a lifeline:’ Southern California refills largest reservoir after wet winter
With Judicial Overhaul Paused, U.S. Softens Tone on Netanyahu
In a sign of easing tensions in Israel after the suspension of a contentious judicial overhaul, the United States ambassador to Israel said on Tuesday that President Biden would host the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, in Washington in the coming months, but did not specify a date. The possibility of such a meeting, long coveted by Mr. Netanyahu, came after other shifts in tone overnight from the Biden administration, as Washington signaled its support for Mr. Netanyahu’s decision to delay the divisive judicial plan . But the news did not suggest a complete reset after weeks of fraught relations: The ambassador, Thomas R. Nides, said that no date had been fixed for any meeting, leaving open the possibility that it could be delayed if Mr. Netanyahu pushed ahead with the plan after a delay. The news was nevertheless one of several signs on Tuesday that emotions were calming across Israel after concerns over the judicial overhaul had set off civil unrest on a scale … [Read more...] about With Judicial Overhaul Paused, U.S. Softens Tone on Netanyahu
