Shots in Little Arms: When Can Kids Get the Vaccine?

School children wearing facemasks walk outside Condit Elementary School in outside Houston, Texas. Photo: François Picard/AFP via Getty Images On Monday, every adult became eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine. So when will children be able to get their shots? While children under 16 have not been approved to receive any of the currently available shots, clinical trials to get shots in little arms are underway. Delivering the vaccine to children will be necessary to tame the virus, experts say, and could remove uncertainty around when students will fully return to in-person learning as they already prepare for the upcoming fall 2021 school year. Here’s what we know so far about the vaccine and children. Drug companies have launched critical trials for younger children and their results are expected to be released to the public by the summer . Both Pfizer and Moderna are testing their two-dose vaccines in children as young as 6 months old. (Clinical trials in children require permission from their legal guardians.) According to Dr. Megan Freeman, a specialist in infectious diseases in children at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, when they’ll be “just depends on how quickly they’re able to turn around that data.” Already, Pfizer announced a trial of its vaccine in kids 12 to 15 years old showed it was safe and fully effective . The drugmaker has requested the FDA’s permission to allow teens in that age group to receive the shots. Given that most kids are at low risk for complications from COVID, the need for a pediatric vaccine for the disease may not seem pressing. Research even suggests younger children are less likely to transmit the virus than teens. “We know that kids tend to do pretty well with this infection, but they certainly can spread it to others,” Freeman says. It is therefore crucial to have vaccines available for kids to curb the spread of the coronavirus and to protect high-risk young people, she adds. Freeman is hopeful that the ...

Metrolink Opens COVID Vaccination Clinics At Palmdale, Lancaster Train Stations

PALMDALE (CBSLA) – Regional rail service Metrolink is opening mobile COVID-19 vaccination clinics at two train stations in Palmdale and Lancaster beginning Tuesday. A Metrolink station in Palmdale, Calif., on April 20, 2021. (CBSLA) The two clinics — located at 39000 Clock Tower Plaza Dr. in Palmdale and 44812 Sierra Hwy. in Lancaster — will each be capable of administering up to 250 doses per day. “As vaccine supply increases, partnerships with services such as Metrolink are critical for the county to achieve 80 percent vaccine coverage of people 16 and older within 12 weeks, which would dramatically change the trajectory of the pandemic here in Los Angeles County,” L.A. County Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer said in a statement. The vaccination clinics will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Anyone 16 and older is eligible to receive the vaccine. The clinics will be run by Remedia Care. This comes after the L.A. County-run large-scale vaccine site at Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia closed Sunday . It was replaced by two smaller locations which opened Monday at the College of the Canyons in Santa Clarita and the Palmdale Oasis Park Recreation Center. L.A. County was expected to receive a total of about 600,000 Pfizer and Moderna vaccines this week through both its city and county-run sites, as well as private providers such as pharmacies and health insurance companies. ...

Poll: Most support Johnson & Johnson vaccine pause as ‘responsible’

Most Americans support the pause of Johnson & Johnson’s coronavirus vaccine, finding that it is “responsible,” according to an Axios-Ipsos poll released Tuesday . The poll comes after Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week recommended the pause on the vaccine due to six cases of rare and severe blood clots combined with low blood platelets. A CDC advisory panel met last week to evaluate the data, but wanted time to gather more evidence on the risk of rare blood clots and its possible link to the vaccine. The decision kept the pause in place for the last week. ADVERTISEMENT The panel is expected to meet again on Friday. The survey, conducted April 16-19, found that 91 percent of Americans had heard of the pause on the vaccine. Of those who had heard of the vaccine, 88 percent said they believed the FDA and CDC were “being responsible” by recommending the pause. There was high bipartisan support for this sentiment, with 91 percent of Democrats and 87 percent of Republicans saying the agencies acted responsibly. The survey also found that the pause didn’t affect Americans’ likelihood of getting the vaccine. Only 20 percent say they won’t get the vaccine, holding pace from when Axios conducted their survey in January. Meanwhile, 56 percent said they have already received at least one dose, continuing to increase over the past few months. After evaluating the data from the U.S., the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) safety panel concluded that the benefits of Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine outweighed its risks. However, it said that incidents should be listed as very rare side effects of the vaccine. The poll interviewed 1,033 adults and has a margin of sampling error of 3.3 percentage points.
