UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says those clubs planning a new Super League are ‘taking football hostage’
(CNN) UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin says the "shameless" plans for a new European Super League (ESL) are akin to taking "football hostage." Speaking to CNN Sport contributor Darren Lewis, Ceferin did not hold back on the proposals which threaten to rock the foundations of the sport but was confident the new league would not be a success. "Because we [UEFA] respect the fans, the traditions, football, the football community, our society, we will win. In the end, we will win," Ceferin says. "If 12 people want to meet to take football hostage, just to fill their pockets that are already so full that it's hard to put anything in, they can't win. Long term, they can't win." In a joint announcement Sunday, six English clubs -- Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham Hotspur -- alongside three teams from Italy -- AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus -- and three from Spain -- Atlético Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid -- laid out plans to form a breakaway competition. Read More The announcement has resulted in widespread condemnation, with fans, players and politicians all criticizing the founding members for prioritizing financial gain and creating a closed shop for the richest clubs. "I'm proud and happy that fans respect football, that they love football, that they respect history and they're not for sale," Ceferin added. "Fans are not for sale and football players as well. And I hope they will raise their voice and stop this nonsense of a project that would kill football not only in the UK, but in all Europe." Ceferin says he had previously been reassured by both Juventus and Manchester United that neither club would sign up to the new structure and was left surprised by the news. He was particularly frustrated with Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli, who he said had been ignoring his calls since the rumors of the major announcement were circulating. "I ...
Biden administration kicks off 100-day plan to shore up cybersecurity of electric grid
The Biden administration on Tuesday announced it was kicking off a 100-day plan aimed at protecting the electric grid against cyberattacks. National Security Council spokesperson Emily Horne said Tuesday that the effort will be led by the Department of Energy in partnership with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security (CISA) and the electricity sector. Horne noted in a statement that the plan was “a pilot of the Administration’s broader cybersecurity initiative planned for multiple critical infrastructure sectors.” ADVERTISEMENT “The Biden Administration is taking steps to safeguard U.S.critical infrastructure from persistent and sophisticated cyber threats,” Horne said. “Public-private partnership is paramount to the Administration’s efforts because protecting our Nation’s critical infrastructure is a shared responsibility of government and the owners and operators of that infrastructure,” she said. “The 100-day plan includes aggressive but achievable milestones and will assist owners and operators as they modernize cybersecurity defenses, including enhancing detection, mitigation, and forensic capabilities.” The rollout of the plan comes weeks after the administration was took heat for not including cybersecurity initiatives to protect critical infrastructure in the president's $2.25 trillion infrastructure proposal. An administration spokesperson teased the plan to The Hill earlier this month, saying in a statement that the administration "is committed to safeguarding the cybersecurity of U.S. critical infrastructure from persistent and sophisticated threats.” As part of the plan, the Energy Department’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency Response (CESAR) will work to advance technologies to further protect the grid, and is putting out a request for information (RFI) to enable the electricity sector to provide input on future recommendations for supply chain security. Kamala Harris’ Criminal Justice Plan: End The Death Penalty And Legalize Pot
Democratic California Sen. Kamala Harris released her criminal justice plan Monday — it aims to end both mandatory minimum sentencing and the death penalty as well as legalize marijuana. The policy platform also wants to gradually end for-profit prisons and “mass incarceration.” As the plan notes, the penitentiary population has increased to 2.3 million people today from 500,000 in 1980. To end “mass incarceration,” Harris is advocating an end to mandatory minimum sentencing policies that force judges to administer stricter sentences as well as allowing women convicted of non-violent crimes to serve their sentences outside of jail. 2020 Democratic U.S. presidential candidate and U.S. Sen.
