As America continues to debate, ad nauseam, whether the hot dog is a sandwich (I can’t even remember where the InsideHook office stands at this point), there’s a less fun, more nutritiously-pertinent question we should probably be considering instead: is the summer staple the very worst of the processed meats? Hot dogs are made from emulsified meat trimmings, a vague term that encapsulates “lower-grade muscle trimmings, fatty tissues, head meat, animal feet, animal skin, blood, liver and other edible slaughter by-products.” That whole pig anus thing is a myth, but when you’re eating a battered mash of just about everything else, does it really matter? If a hot dog’s ingredients don’t faze you, perhaps its sodium levels should. A single frank contains nearly a quarter of your daily recommended salt intake. Hot dogs are high in calories and fat, too, and have been linked to type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer. In a darkly comic University of Michigan study from … [Read more...] about Are Hot Dogs the Single Worst Thing You Could Put in Your Body?

The Old Whaling Capital of New Bedford Looks Ahead
“I have some folks here who are painting the other side of the house,” my Airbnb host messaged me before a road trip to New Bedford, Mass. “The guys are really quite awesome/talented artists, lots of good vibes.” Indeed, when Aaren, my travel partner, and I turned off County Street to find our home for two nights — a one-bedroom apartment in an 1855 Victorian that was once apparently rented by Herman Melville’s sister — three painters were industriously updating the house’s exterior with cream, orange, blue and warm gray colors. These days, the entire city, approximately 60 miles from Boston, seems to be getting a fresh coat of paint. Signs of rejuvenation are everywhere, from a park honoring abolitionists to new murals on old buildings. Once the world’s wealthiest city per capita and a powerhouse in whaling and textile manufacturing, New Bedford fell into decline in the mid and late 20th century, enduring a high crime rate, high unemployment, urban blight and bad jokes … [Read more...] about The Old Whaling Capital of New Bedford Looks Ahead
Rep. Mayra Flores Rips NYT for Article Labeling Her ‘Far Right Latina’
Rep. Mayra Flores (R-TX) slammed the New York Times after an article from the publication labeled her and fellow Texas Republican Congressional candidates Monica De La Cruz and Cassy Garcia “far right” Latinas. Flores won the special election in the 34th Congressional District on June 14, flipping the Democrat seat in the densely Hispanic district by running on a platform of core conservative values, indicating a turning tide among Hispanic voters away from the Democrat party. The victory made her “the first Republican to represent the Rio Grande Valley in roughly 150 years,” Breitbart News previously reported . In a Wednesday article titled “The Rise of the Far-Right Latina” New York Times politics reporter Jennifer Medina wrote of Flores in addition to De La Cruz and Garcia, who are nominees in the 15th and the 28th Congressional Districts, respectively. The subheading in the piece states that “Flores is one of three Republican Latinas vying to transform South Texas … [Read more...] about Rep. Elon Musk faced SEC questions over his timing in disclosing Twitter stake
New York (CNN Business) Elon Musk has faced questions from the US Securities and Exchange Commission about how and when he disclosed his large stake in Twitter last month, prior to agreeing to buy the social media company. On April 4, the same day that Musk initially revealed he had bought up a more than 9% stake in Twitter ( TWTR ) and become the company's largest shareholder, the SEC sent him a letter asking why he appeared to have delayed disclosing his stake in an apparent violation of securities law. In its letter to Musk , which emerged Friday, the SEC asked him to "please advise why the [initial disclosure] does not appear to have been made within the required 10 days" from the date on which he acquired a stake in the company greater than 5%. Deal or no deal, Elon Musk could upend Twitter's business for a long time Musk's Twitter stake topped 5% on March 14, according to a filing, in which case the public … [Read more...] about Elon Musk faced SEC questions over his timing in disclosing Twitter stake
Carlson: Is There a Connection Between Prescription Drugs, Mass Shootings?
On Tuesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his program with a monologue reacting to the Highland Park, IL shooting by criticizing the anticipated Democrat and media reactions. However, he said there was a reluctance to consider a possible connection between prescription drugs and shootings like Highland Park. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: Amazingly, it was just over a week ago that Joe Biden singlehandedly ended gun violence in the United States. How did you miss that? Well, you probably were distracted by all the other amazing things Joe Biden is doing, like making air travel more efficient and winning the war in Ukraine. So, you probably weren’t paying attention on June 25th when a law called the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act was signed and it, true to its name, was, in fact, bipartisan. Fashionably liberal Republicans like John Cornyn helped write it. So, the question is, will it live up to the second half? Will it make communities safer? Emphatically yes, said Joe … [Read more...] about Carlson: Is There a Connection Between Prescription Drugs, Mass Shootings?
