2nd former aide accuses New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment

A second former aide has come forward with sexual harassment allegations against New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who responded with a statement Saturday saying he never made advances toward her and never intended to be inappropriate. Charlotte Bennett, a health policy adviser in the Democratic governor’s administration until November, told The New York Times that Cuomo asked her inappropriate questions about her sex life, including whether she had ever had sex with older men. Another former aide, Lindsey Boylan, a former deputy secretary for economic development and special adviser to the governor, recently accused Cuomo of subjecting her to an unwanted kiss and inappropriate comments. Cuomo denied the allegations. Cuomo said in a statement Saturday that Bennett was a “hardworking and valued member of our team during COVID” and that “she has every right to speak out.” He said he had intended to be a mentor for Bennett, who is 25. “I never made advances toward Ms. Bennett nor did I ever intend to act in any way that was inappropriate,” Cuomo’s statement said. “The last thing I would ever have wanted was to make her feel any of the things that are being reported.” Cuomo, however, said he had authorized an outside review of Bennett’s allegations. The governor’s special counsel, Beth Garvey, said that review would be conducted by a former federal judge, Barbara Jones. “I ask all New Yorkers to await the findings of the review so that they know the facts before making any judgements,” Cuomo said. “I will have no further comment until the review has concluded.” The pair of harassment allegations represent a deepening crisis for Cuomo, who just months ago was at the height of his popularity for his leadership during the height of the coronavirus pandemic last spring. In recent weeks, he has been assailed, even by some fellow Democrats, over revelations that his administration had substantially underreported COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes. A state ...

Alex Berenson on ‘censorship’, free speech: ‘Times have changed and the NY Times has changed’

close Video Alex Berenson speaks on censorship, freedom of speech, at CPAC Former New York Times reporter speaks out, remarks how conservative movement welcomes freedom of thought Former New York Times reporter Alex Berenson slammed the mainstream media and Big Tech for its continued attempts to censor and "deplatform" views it does not like or does not want to debate, during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Fla. Berenson joked with the crowd that his otherwise liberal politics wouldn't often land him at the nation's premier conservative activist event. "I'm honestly surprised as any of you that I'm here -- if you knew my voting record you'd think I should be speaking at the ACLU, not CPAC," he said at the conference, which is streaming live on Fox Nation . "Times have changed and the New York Times, where I used to work, has changed." TRUMP, AT CPAC, EXPECTED TO HAMMER BIDEN ON IMMIGRATION, CHINA Video Berenson said that he and other classical liberals have not changed their views on freedom of expression or open public discourse: "It's not me, it's the Times," he said adding that columnists at liberal mainstream papers like the Grey Lady have pivoted to routinely call for censorship of their political opponents. "I never would've imagined being on Fox, while the Times either ignored me or tried to bash me." Berenson made clear the threat of censorship from powerful entities comes both from public and private concerns: the government, Big Tech and media. The pro-censorship crowd is frustrated, he said, because they are recognizing their inability to control public narratives as easily as they want, given the diaspora of media and technology in recent years. "75 million people voted for Donald Trump, and they think that's a cataclysm," he added. Berenson went on to describe more of his own experiences with censorship, ...

Governors lift COVID-19 restrictions despite risks of new spike

Governors across the country are lifting coronavirus restrictions, including mask mandates and capacity limits, despite warning signs ahead of a new spike from virus variants. The moves in several states are risky, given that while cases and hospitalizations have declined dramatically in recent weeks, they are still at extremely high levels, and are showing signs of ticking back up again. More infectious variants of the virus, particularly one first found in the United Kingdom, are adding to the threat of a new spike as they become more prevalent. ADVERTISEMENT While vaccinations are starting to help get the pandemic under control, they are not yet widely available, leaving a crucial period of perhaps a couple of months until increases in vaccine supply can make a larger dent in the pandemic and help ease a return to normal. The Biden administration on Friday raised new alarms about the need to keep restrictions in place. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle Walensky Rochelle Walensky Overnight Health Care: FDA panel endorses Johnson & Johnson vaccine | CDC director warns decline in cases 'may be stalling' | Biden administration buys 100,000 doses of Lilly antibody drug FDA panel endorses Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine CDC director warns decline in COVID-19 cases 'may be stalling' in 'concerning shift' MORE said at a White House briefing that data indicates recent declines in cases “may be stalling” in a “very concerning shift in the trajectory.” “Things are tenuous,” she said. “Now is not the time to relax restrictions.” The White House is avoiding a face-off with governors by declining to call out specific states easing restrictions too soon. However, Andy Slavitt, the White House senior adviser for the coronavirus response, made it clear their advice contradicts several states recently moving ahead with downgrading lockdown measures. “We couldn't say it in stronger terms: We think ...

Black History Is Our History: New Jersey Chapter Of Black Prosecutors Association Founded On Desire To Build Trust With Community

TRENTON, N.J. (CBSNewYork) – It’s Black History Month and we are highlighting an association that supports and uplifts Black prosecutors. The Black Prosecutors Association was started in the early 1980s after a Denver prosecutor realized he had very few colleagues nationwide that looked like him. It has since grown, with its newest local chapter starting in New Jersey . READ MORE: Black History Is Our History: World Champion Gymnast Wendy Hilliard Uses Her Own Experience To Encourage Next Generation Of Black Athletes To Succeed More than 40 years ago, Anne Thompson, the first woman and first African American federal judge in New Jersey, spoke to a 4th grade class in Trenton and changed the life of then-student Tracy Thompson – no relation. “There she was standing, so regal… and explained to us that she was a prosecutor,” Tracy Thompson told CBS2’s Lisa Rozner. “And from then on, every day for the rest of my life was about how do I get to be a prosecutor.” Tracy Thompson is now New Jersey’s acting insurance fraud prosecutor for the attorney general. She earned degrees from the University of Pennsylvania and Temple Law School, despite seeing a lot as a young girl. Her father was incarcerated for a period of time and died when she was 17. Two relatives were murdered. As a child, her classmate and friend Jon Mitchell was raped and killed in Trenton. It only fueled Thompson to play a part in making sure the criminal justice system was fair to all. “People who I am prosecuting have more faith and confidence that they’re going to get a fair shot,” she said. It is the latest branch of the national association, which was started more than 35 years ago by Denver prosecutor Norman Early and others, including former New York City narcotics prosecutor and current federal judge Sterling Johnson.
