Senator Elizabeth Warren has come calling as recently as April. Kamala Harris, the first-term senator of California, has made repeated visits, starting as early as her third month in office. Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is also no stranger to the big-money donor world of New York; he was here in April — his third such visit in three months. It will be months before Mr. Biden, Ms. Harris, Ms. Warren or most potential presidential aspirants will barnstorm across the farmlands of Iowa, dig into a low-country boil in South Carolina or field questions at a town-hall meeting in New Hampshire. But with American presidential races requiring an ever-dizzying amount of money, an early, behind-the-scenes 2020 contest is already taking place: the New York money primary. Over passed appetizers, intimate dinners and private board room meet-and-greets, a parade of nationally ambitious Democrats have been cycling through the offices and living rooms of the Manhattan money set. … [Read more...] about The First 2020 Race Is Underway: Scrambling for New York Donors

New York’s Evidence Discovery Reforms ‘Crippled’ Prosecutors, Coincided With Massive Crime Spike: REPORT
New York passed Law Article 245 in 2020, making the process of discovery significantly more difficult for prosecutors. This has led to a dramatic increase in the number of cases dropped, despite rising crime. Law 245 “has crippled the state’s criminal justice system with an untenable compliance burden,” according to a new report by the Manhattan Institute. New reforms in New York have dramatically diminished the ability to prosecute criminals during historic crime increases, according to a new report by the Manhattan Institute. In 2019, New York passed Law Article 245, which significantly changed the process by which discovery in criminal cases is handled. Since the change, there has been a 25 percentage point increase in the rate of cases dismissed — from 44% in 2019 to 69% in October 2021, according the Manhattan Institute. Law Article 245 put in place 21 additional categories of discovery, the process by which the prosecutor submits all relevant evidence against … [Read more...] about New York’s Evidence Discovery Reforms ‘Crippled’ Prosecutors, Coincided With Massive Crime Spike: REPORT
How New York Got a Glorious Throwback Roller-Skating Extravaganza
To some people, a roller rink is just a place to skim around in a circle, not even very fast, going nowhere. But to its devotees and to the creators of the DiscOasis , a new skate experience in Central Park, it is transformational, spiritual — time travel on four wheels. On Saturday night, more than a thousand skaters packed Wollman Rink, laced up their quads and spun off into sparkling nostalgia. Spotlights shone onto the surrounding trees, as a concert-level light show bathed the space in cyan, fuschias and golds. “Good Times,” that 1970s party staple, blared from D.J. Funkmaster Flex’s booth, as the crowd — some wobblies, some more expert — parted for the pros: One roller dancer in flared jeans dropped to a split, while another flipped off her wheels, uncoiling into a headstand. For 10 minutes, it was all hot pants and acrobatics, and then regular New Yorkers — many with a style not far-off — slid back in. Hovering over this opening night like a sequined demigod was Nile … [Read more...] about How New York Got a Glorious Throwback Roller-Skating Extravaganza
For Lorna Courtney of ‘& Juliet,’ New York Has Always Been Her Stage
To pursue her dreams of stardom, Lorna Courtney didn’t have to move far away from home. But she did have a lengthy daily commute. In her teens, she would take a bus and two trains (or three, “depending on how long I wanted to walk”) from her home in South Ozone Park, Queens, to the prestigious LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts on the Upper West Side in Manhattan. “That’s not even bad, because there were people that commuted from Staten Island,” said Courtney, the young, Tony Award-nominated star of the new Broadway musical “& Juliet.” The real distances, however, were not measured in miles. At LaGuardia, Courtney was thrown into a new world. “I realized that I was with people who had free lunch and people whose parents had yachts,” she said recently at a cafe near Union Square. She made the most of her years studying voice at LaGuardia, performing in student productions and taking on the roles of Nina in “In the Heights” and Belle in “Beauty and the … [Read more...] about For Lorna Courtney of ‘& Juliet,’ New York Has Always Been Her Stage
Sweet Little AI Lies: New York Lawyer Faces Sanctions After Using ChatGPT to Write Brief Filled with Fake Citations
A New York-based attorney is facing potential sanctions after using OpenAI’s ChatGPT to write a legal brief he submitted to the court. The problem? The AI Chatbot filled the brief with citations to fictitious cases, a symptom of AI chatbots called “hallucinating.” In an affadavit, the lawyer claimed, “I was unaware of the possibility that [ChatGPT’s] content could be false.” Engadget reports that attorney Steven Schwartz of the law firm Levidow, Levidow and Oberman used AI to help with a lawsuit against the Colombian airline Avianca in a ground-breaking case, highlighting AI’s potential drawbacks in legal practice. However, the resulting legal brief prepared with ChatGPT’s help was filled with references to court rulings that simply did not exist.
