Slumping New Jersey Devils Falls To Washington Capitals
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Based on recent results, the Washington Capitals are getting used to coach Peter Laviolette’s new system. They are even winning games when Nicklas Backstrom and Alexander Ovechkin don’t contribute a point. READ MORE: Strome, Kreider Lead Rangers To Win Over Bruins Garnet Hathaway and Daniel Sprong scored in the opening 5:06 and the streaking Capitals opened an early three-goal lead and held off a rally by the slumping New Jersey Devils in a 5-2 win on Saturday. Lars Eller, who added the third goal in a big opening period, thinks Washington is hitting its stride in a 5-1-1 run that followed a four-game losing streak. “I think Pittsburgh (Thursday) was maybe our best game of the season and today we finally came out with a really good start, we were on our toes, all four lines were going,” Eller said. “I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen here lately, but especially the last two games more so maybe, and then the last five, seven or so.” Jabub Vrana scored on a third-period breakaway and Nic Dowd added an empty net tally as the Capitals kept New Jersey at bay after it got within a goal of the lead. Rookie Vitek Vanecek had 22 saves in his ninth win. Nico Hischier and Pavel Zacha each scored for the second consecutive game for New Jersey, which has lost four of five. Mackenzie Blackwood had 19 saves as the Devils opened a five-game homestand. Devils coach Lindy Ruff said the opening period was dreadful. “We weren’t ready to play,” Ruff said. “We weren’t ready to compete. We turned a lot of pucks over and looked like we wanted to be a little bit of a fancy team, because our wall battles weren’t great to start the game. I thought the last 40, that’s the team I like to see. But totally unacceptable in the first 20.” The Capitals, who rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat New Jersey last Sunday, learned from that game and started fast. Hathaway opened the scoring at 3:36, depositing a nice cross-ice pass by defenseman Justin ...

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS/AP) – Legislation to set up a recreational marijuana marketplace, decriminalize cannabis and loosen penalties for underage possession of the drug and alcohol was signed into law Monday by New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, more than three months after voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot question to legalize adult use of the drug. The Democrat-led Assembly and Senate passed the last-minute measure Monday to ease penalties on underage possession of both alcohol and marijuana as a way to secure Democratic Gov. The move comes after voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot question giving adult use of the drug the green light. “I’m not considered a criminal anymore,” Florentino Parra said. It took longer than expected but Murphy signed three bills into law Monday that legalize and decriminalize marijuana in the Garden State, something millions of New Jerseyans voted in favor of back in November. “I think the soonest — whether it’s going to be in early 2022 — the soonest I think New Jersey residents are going to get it is via delivery services someway,” said Chris Goldstein, the regional organizer of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. EXPLAINER: What Can, Can’t You Do With Cannabis In New Jersey Now?
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey’s recreational marijuana market is now voter-approved and in effect under legislation signed last week by Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. New Jersey residents voted by a 2-to-1 margin in November to join 14 other states and the District of Columbia with legal marijuana for recreational use. Only those 21 and older can legally possess and use the drug. But there are a lot of ins and outs to consider. READ MORE: Police: 1 Woman Dead After Double Shooting At Lehigh County Walmart So what can you and can’t you do with marijuana? Here’s a closer look at New Jersey’s emerging marijuana reality: ___ WHEN AND WHERE CAN I BUY MARIJUANA? Nowhere just yet. Even though the laws Murphy signed took effect immediately, the new Cannabis Regulatory Commission has to set up rules and dole out licenses. All of that could take up to six months, according to the governor and industry experts. ___ SO WHAT’S LEGAL, THEN? It’s no longer a violation of state law to have 6 ounces (170 grams) or less of marijuana or about three-fifths of an ounce (17 grams) of hashish. It’s not a crime any longer to be under the influence of marijuana or hashish, or to possess marijuana paraphernalia or to be in possession of it while operating a car. The state still has laws against driving under the influence of drugs. ___ WHAT IF I’M UNDER 21? The first offense is a written warning. The law makes it clear that the person’s parent or guardian is not to be notified. The second offense is a written warning along with information on drug treatment services. Police must provide a copy of the second warning to those under 18, along with a notice about the first offense as well. The third offense carries a written warning again along with a referral to drug treatment services. Parents and guardians would also be notified of a third warning. ___ CAN I GROW MY OWN?
