Time may not heal all wounds, but it does sometimes allow one to overlook the bad in favor of the good. That’s certainly been the case with George Lucas’ Star Wars prequels, whose many shortcomings (The dialogue! The wooden acting! Jar Jar!) were rightfully ridiculed at the time, and yet now seem amusingly quaint and corny aspects of uniquely quirky and visually striking blockbusters made by an artist with a distinctive vision. Even when they’re lame (which is often), they’re at least interesting byproducts of a singular artist’s imagination, and thus far removed from the current flavorless tentpoles now dominating the American movie marketplace—including, of course, most of the Star Wars films and TV series produced since Lucas sold his franchise to Disney for a few billion. All of which means that Obi-Wan Kenobi is a unique undertaking tasked with simultaneously expanding the Star Wars IP (à la its post-2005 offerings) and faithfully following in the footsteps of … [Read more...] about Star Wars Prequel ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Is Masterfully Guided by Ewan McGregor

‘Return to Seoul’ Review: A Restless, Graceful Drama About Identity Formed Rather Than Found
Click here to read the full article. In order to return somewhere, you first have to leave it. So it’s arguable whether the initial visit in Davy Chou ’s strange, deep, changeable and wise “ Return to Seoul ” even qualifies in a meaningful sense as a return. 25-year-old Freddie (Park Ji-min), the film’s charismatic but somewhat unlikable protagonist, was adopted by French parents as a baby, and has no memory of the voyage that removed her from the country of her birth. But though she is the last to admit it, there is more to her jaunt to Korea than coincidence and idle curiosity. While Chou’s elliptical screenplay gently explodes many preconceived assumptions about the effects of adoption on adoptees, it is too clear-sighted to ignore the fact that whether biology affects identity or not, the mere possibility that such a link exists could exert a powerful attraction on a searching spirit not quite sure what it is searching for. Set across eight dramatically transformative … [Read more...] about ‘Return to Seoul’ Review: A Restless, Graceful Drama About Identity Formed Rather Than Found

‘Goodnight’: Uvalde Gunman’s Chilling Final Word to Teacher Murdered in School Massacre, Child Tells CNN
The gunman who murdered 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, on Tuesday morning looked one of the teachers in the eye and said “Goodnight” before pulling the trigger, according to a new report. It’s the latest chilling detail to emerge from the Robb Elementary School massacre , the worst school shooting in the U.S. in a decade. The blood-curdling quote comes from an account of the attack from schoolgirl Miah Cerillo, 11, who suffered bullet fragment injuries to her back and shoulders, but managed to survive the attack. Miah was in a fourth-grade classroom with teachers Irma Garcia and Eva Mireles watching Lilo & Stitch as an end of school year treat when the gunman arrived at the door. Recounting what she’d been told by Miah in an interview, journalist Nora Neus says the shooter looked one of the teachers in the eye before blasting the window out of the door. “Miah says it just happened all so fast,” Neus said on CNN on Friday morning. “He backed the … [Read more...] about ‘Goodnight’: Uvalde Gunman’s Chilling Final Word to Teacher Murdered in School Massacre, Child Tells CNN
