The NCAA has a new ranking system to replace RPI when evaluating college basketball teams for the NCAA Tournament. The NCAA Evaluation Tool announced on Wednesday will rely on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency and quality of wins and losses. NET will be used for the 2018-19 season by the committee that selects schools and seeds the tournament. NET rankings will be released early in the season and updated through Selection Sunday, with a final ranking following the tournament. NET was approved in July following months of consultation with the NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Committee, the National Association Basketball Coaches, top basketball analytics experts and Google Cloud Professional Services. Last season, the NCAA introduced a quadrant system to put greater emphasis on road wins. ___ More AP college basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/AP_Top25 Copyright 2018 The … [Read more...] about RPI replaced with new evaluation tool for NCAA Tournament
Justin Sayers Louisville Courier Journal Published 6:05 p.m. UTC Aug 22, 2018 The NCAA announced Wednesday that it's abandoning rating percentage index, or RPI, as its primary tool for selecting and seeding the men's basketball tournament. In its place, the NCAA will instead use the NCAA Evaluation Tool, or NET, which "relies on game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses," according to a news release. The NCAA had used RPI since 1981 as a way to provide data to the men's basketball committee when selecting at-large teams and seeding and bracketing teams in the men's basketball tournament. RPI is calculated based on three factors: winning percentage, strength of schedule and opponent's strength of schedule. But, in recent years, the metric came under scrutiny as other, more accurate tools for evaluating strength and performance were developed. The model, which used team performance data to predict the outcome of games in test sets, was optimized until it was as accurate as possible.
