Jerry Carino Asbury Park Press Published 8:58 PM EDT Mar 12, 2019 A true team effort. That’s been the formula all season for Fairleigh Dickinson University’s basketball team, and it’s the reason the Knights punched an NCAA Tournament ticket Tuesday night. All five starters reached double figures in scoring as FDU shot the lights out in the Northeast Conference Tournament final, knocking off top-seeded host St. Francis (Pa.) 85-76 to earn the program’s sixth Big Dance berth. The effort was a perfect bookend to the superb NEC careers of seniors Darnell Edge and Mike Holloway Jr. In 2016, they were role players as FDU went to Wagner and won the tourney. This time they were pillars; Edge and scored 19 points and Holloway Jr. added 12 points and five assists. Junior forward Kaleb Bishop, a Paterson native and St. Anthony High School grad, came through with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Jahlil Jenkins scored 18 and sophomore forward … [Read more...] about FDU lights up St. Francis to win NEC Tournament, punch NCAA Tournament ticket

Jerry Carino Asbury Park Press Published 2:25 PM EST Mar 9, 2019 NEWARK---The final buzzer sounded and the celebration started in the most fitting fashion imaginable. Every Seton Hall basketball player huddled at center court, a giant embrace for a program that did the unthinkable. After graduating four three-year starters, the Pirates are headed back to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season. And they did it by slaying No. 23 Villanova 79-75 before 16,114 rip-roaring fans who shook the walls of the Prudential Center. The unified celebration was perfect, because this wasn’t the Myles Powell show. This was all hands on deck as the (18-12 overall, 9-9 Big East) fired on all cylinders to take down Villanova (22-9, 13-5) for the first time since the epic 2016 Big East Tournament final. Coming off the heels of Wednesday’s comeback win over No. 16 Marquette, it capped one of the most memorable weeks in program history. The Pirates came out completely locked-in … [Read more...] about Seton Hall basketball punches NCAA Tournament ticket with upset of Villanova
Jerry Carino Asbury Park Press Published 9:41 AM EST Mar 5, 2019 The final exam arrives this week for Seton Hall basketball, when Marquette and Villanova visit the Prudential Center. Contrary to popular opinion, though, the Pirates don’t have to sweep these ranked teams to make the NCAA Tournament. Brad Wachtel, a New Jersey-based bracketologist whose “Facts and Bracks” projection has been one of the most accurate in past years, believes one win — plus one more in the Big East Tournament — will do the trick. “I compared Seton Hall to the other bubble teams, about 15 of them, and Seton Hall still has a better resume than almost all of them,” said Wachtel, who has the Hall as a No. 12 seed right now. “Throw the (overall) record out the window. That doesn’t matter.” What matters most is quality wins. Because the Pirates played a rugged non-conference schedule and the Big East lacks a real basement, they are … [Read more...] about Seton Hall basketball: Could Marquette win punch NCAA Tournament ticket?
