For many of us, the journey from Houston to Dallas is strictly utilitarian, a task to be completed rather than savored. After all, whether driving I-45 the whole way or breaking off to hit the small towns running along SH 19, the scenery can be a bit monotonous. Unless of course there's a special treat waiting along the route. In Sri Lanka, Triumphs in Cricket and Netball Bring Joy to a Nation in Crisis
COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — The streets of Sri Lanka’s capital have been jammed with crowds in recent months, as rage over an economic meltdown led to protests that dethroned a long-ruling political dynasty . Crowds were back in Colombo on Tuesday, but instead of railing against corruption, they were celebrating twin sporting triumphs. Sri Lanka’s men’s cricket team captured the Asia Cup in the T20 format, the game’s shortest version, on Sunday, taking the top spot for the first time in eight years by upsetting Pakistan in the final. Almost no one had expected that result from a tournament that was itself moved to the United Arab Emirates from Sri Lanka because of the country’s political and economic crises. In Singapore on Sunday, Sri Lanka also won the Asia Cup in women’s netball, a game that is similar to basketball and, like cricket, came to South Asia through the influence of British colonial authorities. During a parade that set off from Colombo’s international airport … [Read more...] about In Sri Lanka, Triumphs in Cricket and Netball Bring Joy to a Nation in Crisis

Your Thursday Briefing: Tanks for Ukraine
Tanks for Ukraine Yesterday, Germany and the U.S. pledged to send tanks to Ukraine after weeks of diplomatic maneuvering. The pledges could unlock a wave of additional aid ahead of an expected escalation of fighting in the spring. It could take a year or more for 31 American M1 Abrams tanks to reach the battlefield. But the U.S. promise did clear the way for Germany to commit to sending 14 of its Leopard 2 tanks , which could arrive in several months. The decision by Germany to authorize other nations to transfer their own Leopards prompted officials in Finland, the Netherlands and Spain to say that they would seek to send tanks to Ukraine, or that they were open to doing so. Fighting: The announcements come at a critical juncture. Ukraine said yesterday that its forces had retreated from Soledar , a key town near the eastern city of Bakhmut. Diplomacy: Germany made clear that it would send the Leopards only if the U.S. sent the Abrams. Yesterday, … [Read more...] about Your Thursday Briefing: Tanks for Ukraine
40 reasons not to leave San Francisco
San Francisco is the type of city that captures you. For many, it’s love at first sight. How could you not fall for the fog-draped skyline, the stately Victorians or the many parks scattered throughout the city? Others might not warm up until the second or third date, the deal sealed by a life-affirming burrito or yet another impossible Steph Curry 3-pointer. Or maybe you need to stumble upon a punk concert on a BART train to be convinced that the city still has a renegade streak underneath its techie exterior. Yet San Francisco is far from a perfect partner. Issues of inequality, gentrification and high costs are just a few of the reasons many have lost faith, exacerbated by a pandemic exodus that we’re still recovering from. Despite the many reasons to leave SF, there are so many things to love. To celebrate San Francisco, 20 members of SFGATE’s staff contributed reasons we’ve resisted the temptation to leave for less-foggy pastures. Here’s why we’re staying in our beautifully … [Read more...] about 40 reasons not to leave San Francisco
