HONG KONG — At first China said there was “ no such thing ” as re-education centers that held vast numbers of people in its far western Xinjiang region. Then, as more reports emerged that hundreds of thousands of Uyghurs and members of other largely Muslim groups were being detained, Beijing acknowledged the camps’ existence but described them as vocational training centers. When overseas Uyghurs spoke out about the authorities’ abuses in Xinjiang, China targeted their families back home, sentencing their relatives to long prison terms and using the full weight of state media and prominent Chinese diplomats to denounce the activists as liars and frauds. For the many Uyghur activists who have campaigned — often at great personal cost — to bring China’s intense crackdown in Xinjiang to light, a United Nations report released on Wednesday that largely validated their claims was a powerful, if long-delayed, vindication. The 48-page report, which said that China had … [Read more...] about For Uyghurs, U.N. Report on China’s Abuses Is Long-Awaited Vindication

How major US stock indexes fared Friday 2/3/2023
Wall Street’s rally hit a wall after a surprisingly strong jobs report fueled worries about inflation and higher interest rates. The S&P 500 fell 1% Friday, its first drop in four days, though it took an up-and-down route to get there. The bond market was more decisive in thinking the strong jobs data may push the Federal Reserve to get firmer on high interest rates, which hurt the economy and markets. Treasury yields zoomed higher. Tech stocks also weighed on the market following profit reports that were weaker than expected. On Friday: The S&P 500 fell 43.28 points, or 1%, to 4,136.48. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 127.93 points, or 0.4%, to 33,926.01. The Nasdaq composite fell 193.86 points, or 1.6%, to 12,006.95. The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 15.69 points, or 0.8%, to 1,985.53. For the week: The S&P 500 is up 65.92 points, or 1.6%. The Dow is down 52.07 points, or 0.2%. Post-Pandemic Japan Sees First-in-a-Generation Crime Spike
The National Police Agency (NPA) of Japan published statistics on Thursday showing that the country experienced an increase in criminal activity in 2022 for the first time in 20 years. The report tracked the number of police reports on documented crimes in addition to arrests. Among the crimes identified as seeing a significant rise in frequency were rape, child abuse, and street crimes, such as muggings and bicycle thefts. The rates of domestic violence and child abuse hit “all-time highs,” according to a report by the Indian news site First Post. Police also referred a record number of children to consultation centers after finding evidence of abuse. The increase follows a dramatic drop in crime following the eruption of the coronavirus pandemic originating in Wuhan, China, in late 2019. Japan shut its schools in February 2020 and sternly encouraged mask usage and “social distancing.” Relatively lax, compared to other parts of the world, government coronavirus restrictions … [Read more...] about Post-Pandemic Japan Sees First-in-a-Generation Crime Spike
Report: MSHA missed problems at doomed W.Va. mine
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Federal inspectors either missed problems at West Virginia's Upper Big Branch mine or failed to inspect the areas where they existed in the 18 months before a deadly 2010 explosion, but an internal review concludes there's no evidence those failures caused the disaster. The Mine Safety and Health Administration posted the report online Tuesday after briefing relatives of the 29 miners killed in the nation's worst coal mining disaster in four decades. The report acknowledges multiple failures by field staff in MSHA's largest region, southern West Virginia's District 4. It also said their effectiveness was compromised by internal communication problems and by federal budget cuts that had created staffing shortages, inexperience and a lack of sufficient training and managerial oversight. Although MSHA has made significant improvements in the past two years, the report said it's not enough and contains about 20 pages of detailed, technical … [Read more...] about Report: MSHA missed problems at doomed W.Va. mine
