THERE comes a time when a satirical writer, if he's really out for blood, must stop clowning around and move in for the kill. That unmistakable moment of truth arrives about halfway through ''The Colored Museum,'' the wild new evening of black black humor at the Public Theater. In a sketch titled ''The Last Mama-on-the-Couch Play,'' the author, George C. Wolfe, says the unthinkable, … [Read more...] about STAGE: ‘COLORED MUSEUM,’ SATIRE BY GEORGE C. WOLFE

New Laguna Art Museum Exhibit To Showcase Old Laguna, Beauty of OC
0 Community Corner The exhibition will showcase the work of an important California artist whose pieces "capture the energy and beauty" of Orange County. Miranda Ceja , Patch Staff Posted Reply LAGUNA BEACH, CA — A new exhibition will debut at the Laguna Art Museum this June, museum organizers announced Tuesday. The upcoming exhibition, Joseph Kleitsch: Abroad and At Home in Old Laguna, will showcase the work of impressionist painter Joseph Kleitsch, whose pieces "vividly capture the energy and beauty of Southern California" when it debuts on June 24. The Hungarian-born artist's early work is comprised mostly of small still-life paintings and eventually, skilled portraits which he built his name on. In 1920, he and his wife Edna settled in Laguna Beach, where he became a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association and started painted landscapes and street scenes. “We cannot wait to welcome guests to this exhibition … [Read more...] about New Laguna Art Museum Exhibit To Showcase Old Laguna, Beauty of OC

New York Public Library Acquires George C. Wolfe’s Archives
When the playwright and director George C. Wolfe moved to New York City in his 20s, he got a job at an archive for Black cultural history , where his work saving newspaper articles and maintaining records fueled a habit of preserving his own ephemera. “It activated this sort of curiosity-slash-obsession about who gets remembered, what gets saved, what gets valued and what doesn’t,” Wolfe said recently. On Thursday, the New York Public Library announced that it had acquired more than 50 boxes of material from throughout Wolfe’s career, during which he became one of the most sought-after theater directors in the country. His productions, including “Angels in America” and “Bring in ’Da Noise, Bring in ’Da Funk,” garnered multiple Tony Awards, and he’s credited with revolutionizing the Public Theater over a decade as its producer. Working scripts, correspondence with theatrical figures such as Tony Kushner (with whom Wolfe worked closely on “Angels in America”) and photographs … [Read more...] about New York Public Library Acquires George C. Coming Soon, a Century Late: A Black Film Gem
For decades, the seven reels from 1913 lay unexamined in the film archives of the Museum of Modern Art. Now, after years of research, a historic find has emerged: what MoMA curators say is the earliest surviving footage for a feature film with a black cast. It is a rare visual depiction of middle-class black characters from an era when lynchings and stereotyped black images were commonplace. What’s more, the material features Bert Williams, the first black superstar on Broadway. Williams appears in blackface in the untitled silent film along with a roster of actors from the sparsely documented community of black performers in Harlem on the cusp of the Harlem Renaissance. Remarkably, the reels also capture behind-the-scenes interactions between these performers and the directors. MoMA plans an exhibition around the work called “100 Years in Post-Production: Resurrecting a Lost Landmark of Black Film History,” which is to open on Oct. 24 and showcase excerpts and still frames. Adopt From Laguna Beach Area Shelters: See New Local Dogs, Cats & More
0 Pets This week's batch of adoptable pets in the Laguna Beach area are looking for their forever homes. Is one of them yours? Pet News , Patch Staff Posted Reply If you've been hoping to add a four-legged ball of love and affection to your family, you should check out these Laguna Beach area shelters for a pet who needs a home. About 6.5 million pets are surrendered or taken in each year by adoption agencies nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, approximately 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats. Shelters often look after other animals in search of a permanent home as well, including pigs, birds and even horses. However, only around half of all shelter pets are adopted each year, ASPCA data shows. This means millions of animals — some right here in the Laguna Beach area — are still waiting for their forever homes. With help from our friends at … [Read more...] about Adopt From Laguna Beach Area Shelters: See New Local Dogs, Cats & More
