(AP) — Hershel W. “Woody” Williams, the last remaining Medal of Honor recipient from World War II, whose heroics under fire over several crucial hours at the Battle of Iwo Jima made him a legend in his native West Virginia, died Wednesday. He was 98. Williams' foundation announced on Twitter and Facebook that he died at the Veterans Affairs medical center bearing his name in Huntington. “Today, America lost not just a valiant Marine and a Medal of Honor recipient, but an important link to our Nation’s fight against tyranny in the Second World War,” U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in a statement. “I hope every American will pause to reflect on his service and that of an entire generation that sacrificed so much to defend the cause of freedom and democracy.” As a young Marine corporal, Williams went … [Read more...] about Last remaining WWII Medal of Honor recipient dies at 98

Column: Ron DeSantis is setting the agenda for the GOP, and Democrats should worry
WASHINGTON — The most intriguing politician in the Republican Party is an uncharismatic governor who’s trying to make the GOP’s culture war appealing to suburban mothers. Ron DeSantis, the 43-year-old governor of Florida, has been on a tear. Originally a tea party-style fiscal conservative, he’s embraced a series of hard-edged positions that have boosted him into second place in early — OK, way-too-early — polls for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. (First place is still occupied by former President Donald Trump.) “He’s taken on the left more aggressively than any U.S. governor in modern history,” Fox News pundit Laura Ingraham enthused last month when she devoted an entire hour of her prime-time program to DeSantis. Politics Essential Politics: Conspiracy theories and fear of immigrants — a toxic mix Conspiracy-minded Americans provide powerful support for some pernicious ideas. The political establishment has lost its ability to keep such ideas at … [Read more...] about Column: Ron DeSantis is setting the agenda for the GOP, and Democrats should worry
Bay Briefing: Will new COVID variants make the surge even worse?
Good morning, Bay Area. It’s Thursday, June 30, and we may finally find out today if the Oakland Athletics will be approved to move forward with their ballpark at Howard Terminal. Here’s what you need to know to start your day. Surge upon a surge? Before the current COVID surge, the Bay Area had been accustomed to the pandemic pattern where a rise in cases over several weeks was then followed by a short plateau and rapid drop. It’s now very clear: that isn’t playing out this time. Cases continue to rise in the Bay Area and across the nation, as two new highly infectious and immune-evasive coronavirus variants, BA.4 and BA.5, become dominant. These new variants could prolong the current surge or cause a fresh spike in cases, and they could apply pressure on health care systems frayed from nearly three years of pandemic stress. Just how bad could things get this time — and would mask mandates and other restrictions return? Erin Allday looks at what we know now . How to … [Read more...] about Bay Briefing: Will new COVID variants make the surge even worse?
LIV Golf comes to U.S., but it’s not compelling sports theater on any level
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 4 At some point, if the moral outrage subsides (it shouldn’t) and the eye-popping payouts fade into the background, this will become mostly about golf. The players. The actual competition. And that doesn’t shape up as especially appetizing, either. The LIV Golf Invitational Series makes its United States debut Thursday outside Portland, Ore. Three weeks ago, when the inaugural event was held near London, Charl Schwartzel held off Hennie du Plessis to win. Boy, that was riveting. Oh, wait, you don’t remember? Greg Norman and his rogue tour obviously can’t claim the ethical high ground. Not when its funding comes from Saudi Arabia, widely known for rampant human-rights abuses. Not when this looks, feels and smells like a blatant attempt at “sportswashing.” Norman’s bold, distasteful venture also can’t claim any sort of golf high ground. Not when its highest-profile player … [Read more...] about LIV Golf comes to U.S., but it’s not compelling sports theater on any level

Michigan Advance , News Partner Posted Reply Michigan Advance June 15, 2022 About three dozen activists from the Defend Black Voters Coalition rallied on Detroit’s riverfront on Monday to criticize what they described as voter suppression efforts backed by corporate entities, while General Motors’ Board of Directors met in the nearby Renaissance Center. Activists argue that major Michigan corporations back GOP lawmakers who back voting restriction legislation as well as the “voter suppression effort called the Secure MI Vote initiative.” Following former President Donald Trump’s 2020 election loss, Republicans … [Read more...] about Black Voters Coalition Calls Out GM, Blue Cross Blue Shield For Supporting ‘Voter Suppression’
