(AFP) — Russia fired a barrage of missiles at Kyiv on Monday sending panicked residents running for shelter in an unusual daytime attack on the Ukrainian capital following overnight strikes. A series of explosions rang out in Kyiv on Monday as Russia targeted the city for the second time in 24 hours. AFP journalists heard at least 10 explosions from around 11:10 am local time (0810 GMT) in Kyiv, starting just a few minutes after an air raid warning sounded. Authorities said Ukrainian air defences had downed every Russian missile launched against the Kyiv region. “A total of 11 missiles were fired: ‘Iskander-M’ and ‘Iskander-K’ from a northerly direction,” Ukraine’s armed forces chief Valery Zaluzhny said. “All the targets were destroyed by air defences,” he added. Sergiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s city administration, said that Russians struck in the morning when “most residents were at work and on the streets”. “The Russians are clearly demonstrating that they are aiming to … [Read more...] about Russia Launches Rare Daytime Missile Strike on Ukrainian Capital Kyiv

Russia Launches ‘Largest’ Drone Strike on Kyiv, Ukrainians Claim
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) – Ukraine’s capital was subjected to the largest drone attack since the start of Russia’s war, local officials said, as Kyiv prepared to mark the anniversary of its founding on Sunday. At least one person was killed. Russia launched the “most massive attack” on the city overnight Saturday with Iranian-made Shahed drones, said Serhii Popko, a senior Kyiv military official. The attack lasted more than five hours, with air defense reportedly shooting down more than 40 drones. A 41-year-old man was killed and a 35-year-old woman was hospitalized when debris fell on a seven-story nonresidential building and started a fire, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. Ukraine’s air force said that Saturday night was also record-breaking in terms of Shahed drone attacks across the country. Of the 54 drones launched, 52 were shot down by air defense systems. This photograph taken on May 28, 2023, in Kyiv, shows falling debris of a drone after it was shot down during a … [Read more...] about Russia Launches ‘Largest’ Drone Strike on Kyiv, Ukrainians Claim
As Both Sides Step Up Long-Range Strikes, Russians Hit a Ukrainian Hospital
KYIV, Ukraine — Explosions far behind the front lines shook Ukraine on Friday, as a Russian missile demolished part of a hospital complex and apparent Ukrainian strikes hit Russian-occupied cities, in their escalating, long-range aerial war. The attack on a medical center in the central city of Dnipro killed at least two people, left three more missing and injured at least 30, Ukrainian officials said. It destroyed a three-story building and damaged several others. President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine posted to social media a video of a gutted building, its roof and upper walls missing, belching smoke into the sky, calling it “another crime against humanity.” Ukraine is expected to launch a major counteroffensive soon — some analysts say it may already be in its earliest phases — and both sides have stepped up their strikes from a distance ahead of the clash on the ground. Kyiv’s forces have increased the tempo and range of attacks deep into Russian-held territory, … [Read more...] about As Both Sides Step Up Long-Range Strikes, Russians Hit a Ukrainian Hospital
Russia Targets Kyiv With Third Wave of Strikes in 24 Hours, Killing One
Russia unleashed another wave of attacks early Tuesday on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, killing at least one and prompting evacuations, extending a day of terror for the city’s residents that started with midday strikes. Explosions rang out in different parts of Kyiv overnight, according to local and military officials, sparking a fire in a high-rise building and killing one person. At least three people were injured. It was not immediately clear whether the damage was from the debris of intercepted attacks or from direct hits. A month of relentless assaults on the capital has shaken a weary populace. Local officials said there had been 17 attacks in 30 days, rivaling some of the city’s worst moments since the invasion. Ukrainian officials have said the concentrated attacks were aimed at confusing and incapacitating its air defense systems, and at intimidating and exhausting civilians. Twenty people were evacuated from the high-rise building, where the two upper floors were … [Read more...] about Russia Targets Kyiv With Third Wave of Strikes in 24 Hours, Killing One
Russian Missile Attack on Kyiv Sends Civilians Racing for Cover
Even in a city where people have adapted the routines of ordinary life to wartime, the spectacle unfolding overhead in Kyiv on Monday was a reminder that while the fighting has been concentrated hundred of miles east, the Ukrainian capital still has a Russian bull’s-eye on it. Ballistic missiles began roaring in shortly after 11 a.m. — a rare daytime barrage that sent city residents racing for cover — and were quickly shot down. But the attack made clear that even as Kyiv, aided by Western allies, builds up its air defense system, Russian forces are intent on testing for soft spots. They have changed the timing of bombardments, the combination of weapons used and the trajectories of missiles and drones, lately flying them low along riverbeds and through valleys to avoid detection, Ukrainian officials say. Russia is trying to “confuse and mislead our air defense system,” Yurii Ihnat, a spokesman for Ukraine’s Air Force Command, said in an appearance on national television over … [Read more...] about Russian Missile Attack on Kyiv Sends Civilians Racing for Cover
Russia resorts to massive Soviet-era bombs as Ukrainian air defenses prove a match for missiles, drones
close Video Russia has proven they’re willing to do ‘anything’ to bring down Ukraine: Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin Former Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Intelligence Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin discusses Russia warning NATO about supplying F-16 jets to Ukraine on ‘Your World.’ The Russian military has resorted to dropping massive Soviet-era bombs in an effort to circumvent Ukrainian air defenses that have proven more than a match for long range missiles and drones. Ukrainian investigators have increasingly found instances of Russia dropping older bombs, some around 1,100 pounds. The low-tech explosives easily circumvent modern air defenses like the U.S.-made Patriot missile systems that are designed to counter long-range missiles and drones. Russia's bombs, resurrected from Cold War-era ordnance stashes, have two major advantages over missiles in that they have no propulsion system for air defenses to track, and they remain airborne for barely a … [Read more...] about Russia resorts to massive Soviet-era bombs as Ukrainian air defenses prove a match for missiles, drones
