DALLAS (AP) — A prominent civil rights attorney was among a group of people arrested in a Dallas suburb during a demonstration in memory of a Black man who died in a struggle with guards at an area jail. McKinney police arrested lawyer Lee Merritt and two others on charges of obstructing a roadway during the Sunday protest over Marvin Scott III's 2021 death in the Collin County jail. Merritt, 40, was also charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon, police said. Merritt, who's forged a national profile representing the families of people killed by law enforcement officers, told The Associated Press that he was “unlawfully arrested” while he attended the protests as the Scott family's lawyer. The attorney said he had been legally carrying a firearm at the time of his arrest, which led to the weapons charge. Merritt was released from jail Monday. The Collin County district attorney's office did not respond to a phone message about whether prosecutors would pursue the charges. ‘Indoctrinate Students’: State Lawmakers Are Pushing Back On The Diversity Initiative Takeover On College Campuses
States across the country are considering legislation that would ban Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives on college campuses, according to a new tracker promoted by the Chronicle of Higher Education. State lawmakers should introduce bills to counter the growing DEI presence because “radical political activists now command so strong a position within universities,” David Randall, National Association of Scholars director of research, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “State legislators’ work is necessary, but all of us must work to free higher education from the pervasive tyranny of DEI bureaucracies,” he said. Several states are considering legislation that would stifle Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts on college campuses across the country, according to a new tracker operated by The Chronicle of Higher Education. Dems Plan to Use Abortion as Cudgel Against NY Republicans in 2024
Part of the Democrats’ strategy to regain control of the House in 2024 is to rail against Republicans from blue states, like New York, who have supported pro-life laws, Politico reported on Monday. “The party lost seven battleground congressional seats in the Empire State, four of which were flipped from blue to red in 2022 — in addition to a handful of others in strongly blue California, New Jersey and Oregon. While advocates for abortion rights organized around specific constitutional or legislative abortion bans in swing states in 2022, many expect the priority of the issue to become more widespread next cycle,” according to the report. The House Majority PAC, a House-specific Democrat political action committee (PAC), is planning to put forward $45 million to compete in New York next cycle. The president of the group, Mike Smith, claimed that “the path to a Democratic House Majority runs through New York,” according to the report. Democrats will focus on House … [Read more...] about Dems Plan to Use Abortion as Cudgel Against NY Republicans in 2024
Geraldine Ferraro Dies: Memories of Her 1984 Campaign
America's first female VP candidate on a major party ticket died today at 75. Lynn Sherr, who traveled with Ferraro on her groundbreaking 1984 campaign, recalls the congresswoman's electrifying debut, the way she inspired women all over the country—and how she handled her loss with grace. Plus, Mark Katz remembers Geraldine Ferraro's great sense of humor . Geraldine Ferraro opened the door to her Washington congressional office, grabbed my hand, and pulled me to the mirror above her fireplace. "C'mere," she said in her brisk Queens cadence. "C'mere. I have to see what everyone's talking about." Photos: Geraldine Ferraro It was the summer of 1984, the first time I'd met her, and the two of us stood side by side gazing at each other's reflection. Everyone, it seems, was right. We did look alike, with our nearly identical short, thatched, and blond-streaked hair, our high cheekbones and strong chins. True, I was some four inches taller than the congresswoman, and she had a … [Read more...] about Geraldine Ferraro Dies: Memories of Her 1984 Campaign
