What do you like to drink after a shift? “Post-shift wind down for me often involves Cognac. I’ll pour myself a Scaffa: a neat/room temperature cocktail of two parts Cognac, 1 part Amaro Nonino and 1 part Cocchi Rosa. I call it ‘Just the Paperwork’ because that’s all that’s left to do to close the books on my day.” What is the all-time best dive bar jukebox song? ““Beast of Burden” by The Rolling Stones. It’s got a rhythm and message that encourages me to day drink in a dive bar. I need no fussing, I need no nursing…” What drink should be banished and why? “Drinks, like everything we consume really, are subjective. If there are people out there who like it, I say give it a seat in the pantheon. No judgment.” Name the first good drink you ever drank and where you had it. “Without being overly romantic regarding the subject, I’m pretty sure my first ‘real’ cocktail I ever … [Read more...] about Going 10 Rounds with Top Bartender Sother Teague

To complete the recipe for her Japanese-style Highball No. 1, bartender Julia Momose needed the perfect piece of ice. She spent three weeks cutting ice into various shapes and, naturally, watching it melt into her Japanese whisky and Oloroso sherry cocktail. Momose, who is partner and creative director at Kumiko, the new Japanese-inspired omakase bar and restaurant in Chicago, finally landed on a unique structure of two diamond-shaped cubes that stand on top of each other. “As the guest is drinking the ice will shift and fall ever so slightly so that they’re not getting hit in the nose with a big spear of ice,” says Momose. “My current thing is cutting ice and experimenting with other angles and different shapes of ice and cutting those down for different glasses.” Essential to the whole process is her ice knife. A gift from Hidetsugu Ueno, legendary bartender and owner of Tokyo’s acclaimed Bar High Five, the ice knife is made from Damascus Japanese … [Read more...] about Top Bartender Julia Momose’s Current Obsession: A Japanese Ice Knife

Monday marked the fifth week in a row that Lizzo’s exuberant breakup anthem “Truth Hurts” landed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, prompting the singer to rally her fans behind an important cause: dethroning Iggy Azalea as the female rapper with the longest-running No. 1 single. Lizzo took to Twitter to ask for support, retweeting the Billboard Charts tweet announcing her No. 1 status for the fifth consecutive week. In all caps, she wrote, “YALL…IF WE KEEP THIS UP FOR 2 MORE WEEKS…TRUTH HURTS COULD BE THE LONGEST FEMALE RAP #1 OF ALL TIME…..RIGHT NOW ITS ‘FANCY’ CAN WE DO IT?!” She also shared a screenshot of the top 10 chart with the comment, “I AM BLESSED.” As Lizzo points out, Azalea’s bombastic 2014 hit “Fancy” currently holds the title. At the time, it was impossible to turn on the radio without hearing the Australian rapper declare, in a forced, unnatural Southern-American twang, … [Read more...] about Why Lizzo Dethroning Iggy Azalea Is So Damn Important
Taylor Swift, a woman who once allegedly used a huge suitcase as a form of paparazzi-dodging transportation, is nothing if not cunning. The once saccharine pop star has slowly evolved into the calculated queen of the long game. Her machinations range from admirably extra (buying a house next door to the Kennedy compound in a thinly veiled attempt to marry a Kennedy) to just too much (the “I heart T.S.” tank top). And that’s just her personal life—when it comes to professional supremacy, Taylor Swift outsmarts every one of her competitors. She has more hits, receives more press (good and bad), and will threaten to sue the shit out of any Etsy seller who gets in her way. Most importantly, Taylor Alison Swift has way more UPS trucks with her face on them than any of her peers. While the foundation of Swift’s success is her ability to write good songs that speak to the middle-school loser in all of us, her fame feeds on a regular diet of romantic gossip and … [Read more...] about Is Taylor Swift Kicking Kanye and Kim While They’re Down?
