(CBS DETROIT) – Testing done by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) over the weekend did not detect the presence of hexavalent chromium in the Huron River following the release of the chemical in the water system last week. On Saturday, Aug. 6, EGLE crews tested water from 55 different locations. After taking 75 samples from these locations, crews found that none of them had detectable levels of either hexavalent chromium or total chromium. Over the weekend of July 30, chemicals were released into the Huron River water system from Tribar Manufacturing in Wixom. The chemical that was released is hexavalent chromium, a carcinogen that can cause negative effects to people through ingestion, skin contact, or inhalation. A water main line near Newark, New Jersey , had a break Tuesday morning, prompting officials to warn residents that the entire city could be without water. The 72-inch water main line break happened in Belleville, just a few miles north of Newark. City officials said the Newark Water Department was on site to repair the main. CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) — New Jersey is now under a drought watch and the state is urging residents to cut back on water usage. It comes after days of hot and dry weather. The state says the watch is intended to encourage voluntary water conservation. But if conditions worsen, a drought warning or emergency could be declared, enacting mandatory water restrictions. The public can make a big difference with a few water conservation tips. Despite hype by environmentalists and many media outlets, the slow collapse of major glaciers in western Antarctica is nothing new, according to scientists. The warming and cooling in the South Pole is well in line with historical trends dating back thousands of years. The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) has released two major studies in the last year that have shed light on western Antarctic collapsing glaciers — both of which show that the thinning sea ice in the western south pole is nothing new. A BAS study released in February found that 8,000 years ago Antarctica’s Pine Island glacier thinned just as fast as it has in recent decades. This happened thousands of years before the Industrial Revolution, which scientists and environmentalists blame for releasing massive amounts of carbon dioxide emissions that have warmed the atmosphere.
