Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once his country’s richest man, has resided in “gulag lite,” as he calls the Russian penal system under Vladimir Putin, for six years. Since the spring, on most working days he is roused at 6:45 in the morning, surrounded by guards and packed into an armored van for the drive to court. For two hours each way, the man who once supplied 2 percent of the world’s oil crouches in a steel cage measuring 47 by 31 by 20 inches. Convicted of tax evasion and fraud in 2005, Khodorkovsky now faces a fresh set of charges that add up to the supposed theft of $30 billion. In the dark of the van, Khodorkovsky tries to prepare for his trial, replaying in his mind his night reading, the daily stack of documents from his lawyers. But Russia’s most famous prisoner worries too about what would happen if a car slammed into the van. (Collisions are routine in Moscow’s clotted avenues.) “Your chances of making it out alive,” he wrote me one day this summer, “at any speed, are next to … [Read more...] about Who Fears a Free Mikhail Khodorkovsky?

The Promise Of Synthetic Proteins: U.C. Berkeley
0 Schools A Berkeley researcher has developed a way to mimic specific functions of natural proteins using only 2, 4 or 6 different building blocks. Bea Karnes , Patch Staff Posted Reply Press release from UC Berkeley News: BERKELEY, CA — Most life on Earth is based on polymers of 20 amino acids that have evolved into hundreds of thousands of different, highly specialized proteins. They catalyze reactions, form backbone and muscle and even generate movement. But is all that variety necessary? Could biology work just as well with fewer building blocks and simpler polymers? Ting Xu, a University of California, Berkeley, polymer scientist, thinks so. She has developed a way to mimic specific functions of natural proteins using only two, four or six different building blocks — ones currently used in plastics — and found that these alternative polymers work as well as the real protein and are a lot easier to synthesize … [Read more...] about The Promise Of Synthetic Proteins: U.C. Gardner was convicted of aggravated murder, a capital felony, in 1985. (AP Photo/Trent Nelson - Pool) (AP) DRAPER, Utah – A barrage of bullets tore into Ronnie Lee Gardner's chest where a target had been pinned over his heart. Two minutes later, the twice-convicted killer was pronounced dead as blood pooled in his dark blue prison jumpsuit. It was the first time in 14 years that an American inmate was executed by firing squad -- a method Gardner choose over lethal injection. But death penalty opponents around the world reacted with horror all the same, renewing an international debate about capital punishment in the U.S. Gardner was the third man to die by firing squad since the Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty in 1976. Unlike Gary Gilmore , who famously … [Read more...] about Utah Firing Squad Executes Convicted Killer

There is a sputtering at the back of the arena—a miniaturized flying saucer, spitting smoke and sparks and lurching along a wire. When it reaches a point above the stage, one's attention is shifted to a huge “hat” that has been suspended there all along. To portentous music, a far larger version of the saucer descends from the hat, exhaust spewing from its thrusters. Finally to flashing lights … [Read more...] about Joyous Musical ‘jivation’ With the P‐Funkadelics
