Washington (CNN) US Marine Corps Sergeant Tyler Vargas-Andrews can remember in specific detail the moment that a suicide bomber attacked Kabul airport's Abbey Gate in August 2021 amid the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan. "A flash and a massive wave of pressure. I'm thrown 4 feet onto the ground but instantly knew what had happened. I opened my eyes to Marines dead or unconscious lying around me. A crowd of hundreds immediately vanished in front of me. And my body was catastrophically wounded with 100 to 150 ball bearings now in it," he recalled. Vargas-Andrews, 25, offered emotional and detailed testimony of the days leading up to the bombing, which took the lives of 13 US service members and more than 100 Afghans, as part of a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on the evacuation from Afghanistan. The Biden administration's frenzied withdrawal after two decades of US involvement in the war has come under immense scrutiny by Republican lawmakers, … [Read more...] about Marine injured in Kabul airport bombing recounts ‘catastrophic’ US withdrawal from Afghanistan at House hearing

Dr. Sticks and the Return of the Splitter
PHOENIX — Triston McKenzie and Logan Gilbert both dress a few lockers down from a surprise American League Cy Young Award winner. In the Cleveland Guardians’ clubhouse in Goodyear, Ariz., it is Shane Bieber, who won in 2020; in the Seattle Mariners’, in Peoria, it is Robbie Ray, who won for Toronto the next season. Neither had finished in the top three in voting before they won. Bieber would not be surprised if the next winner were McKenzie, his Cleveland teammate. “He’s always had a great aura about him,” Bieber said. “He knows how good he can be.” In the search for the A.L.’s next pitching superstar — in the mold of Bieber, Ray and a National Leaguer, Sandy Alcantara, the unanimous Cy Young Award winner for the Miami Marlins last season — McKenzie and Gilbert stand out. Both match the indicators of youthful promise, durability, performance and relative anonymity that made Alcantara a prime candidate for a breakout. They are only 25 years old and withstood the demands of at … [Read more...] about Dr. Sticks and the Return of the Splitter
Laura Ingraham to Trump: ‘Stop Talking About 2020, It’s Over’
Fox News host Laura Ingraham delivered some bold campaign advice to Donald Trump on Wednesday night, as the former president mounts numerous battles that include a possible indictment and an ongoing tit-for-tat with his former pal, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis . “If I were Trump and running his campaign I’d strongly urge him to stop talking about 2020. It’s over. Enough,” Ingraham said. “Marinating in old claims of election fraud will not win over a single voter in any state that he needs to win in 2024 and it gives DeSantis an opening to say, ‘Why take a chance on a guy who just complained after the fact about early voting and ballot harvesting, instead of beating Biden on both fronts?’” Ingraham pulled out a list titled “Laura’s Tips for Trump,” which urged the former president to “explain how you’ll rebuild the economy,” “reassure voters that you can win,” and “run against the Democrats, not the media.” She advised Trump to “talk less about yourself, more about … [Read more...] about Laura Ingraham to Trump: ‘Stop Talking About 2020, It’s Over’
Bones Under Parking Lot Belonged to Richard III
LEICESTER, England — Until it was discovered beneath a city parking lot last fall, the skeleton had lain unmarked, and unmourned, for more than 500 years. Friars fearful of the men who slew him in battle buried the man in haste, naked and anonymous, without a winding sheet, rings or personal adornments of any kind, in a space so cramped his cloven skull was jammed upright and askew against the head of his shallow grave. On Monday, confirming what many historians and archaeologists had suspected, a team of experts at the University of Leicester concluded on the basis of DNA and other evidence that the skeletal remains were those of King Richard III, for centuries the most reviled of English monarchs. But the conclusion, said to have been reached “beyond any reasonable doubt,” promised to achieve much more than an end to the oblivion that has been Richard’s fate since his death on Aug. 22, 1485, at the Battle of Bosworth Field, 20 miles from this ancient city in the sheep country of … [Read more...] about Bones Under Parking Lot Belonged to Richard III
