INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — All 92 of Indiana's counties have reached the highest-risk level for COVID-19 spread for the first time since state health officials began releasing a statewide risk map during the pandemic. Indiana’s color-coded coronavirus risk map on the Indiana Department of Health's dashboard showed that as of Wednesday the entire state was in the highest-risk red category, which indicates very high community spread of COVID-19. That was up from 81 counties rated in the red category last week. Indiana previously had seen a peak of 73 of its 92 counties in the red category in January 2021. The state’s county-level risk level is updated each Wednesday. The entire state entered the highest-risk category as the spread of the highly-contagious omicron variant continues, with that variant accounting for 74.3% of Indiana’s coronavirus cases recorded in January. Indiana's hospitals had 3,492 people hospitalized as of Tuesday because of COVID-19. That's the state's … [Read more...] about All 92 Indiana counties reach top COVID-19 spread risk level

DUBLIN — The murder in broad daylight of a 23-year-old schoolteacher who had been jogging on a well-frequented path along a canal last week has set off a storm of anger and shock across Ireland over women’s safety. Ashling Murphy, a newly qualified first-grade teacher, was attacked and strangled on Jan. 12 as she was running along the Grand Canal near Tullamore in County Offaly, west of Dublin. The attack took place at around 4 p.m. on a stretch popular with walkers, runners and cyclists. The police on Wednesday charged a 31-year-old Slovakian man, Jozef Puska, with murder. Mr. Puska, who the police said lived in County Offaly, was taken to the district court in Tullamore, where he denied the charges. He was remanded in custody to appear in court again next week. The arrest followed days of mounting public outrage about the killing of Ms. Murphy, with vigils held for her across Ireland, and by Irish communities and women’s groups abroad. “The killing of Ashling Murphy … [Read more...] about ‘She Was Just Going for a Run’: Anger in Ireland Over Teacher’s Murder
A new bill introduced this week seeks to control the explosion of feral pigs in California, or what some are calling a ticking "swine bomb," by minimizing hunting restrictions on wild hogs and banning the release of pigs into the wild. The population of feral pigs in California has rapidly increased in recent decades. The Atlantic reported in 2020 that there are as many as 9 million feral swine in the U.S., with their population expanding from 17 to 39 states in under 30 years. The surge in the wild pig population is causing wide-ranging problems, from ransacked lawns in San Jose (where one city council member proposed allowing the use of bows and arrows to hunt them), to herds of pigs running rampant through Corona streets. If approved, Senate Bill 856 , introduced by Napa-area State Sen. Bill Dodd, would allow an owner or tenant in possession of a $15 "wild pig validation" to kill any feral pig destroying property or "injuring, molesting, pursuing, worrying, or … [Read more...] about The population of feral pigs has exploded in California.
