Whenever the late Queen Elizabeth II visited the U.S., the FBI remained on high alert to protect her from potential threats—often from the Irish Republican Army and its sympathizers, according to 102 pages of FBI records released Monday following the monarch’s death last year. First requested by NBC News via the Freedom of Information Act and posted on the FBI’s electronic resource library, called “The Vault,” the documents compile memos, newspaper clippings, teletype communications, and other records of Her Majesty’s visits dating back to 1976. The files reveal how the FBI, in partnership with the Secret Service and local authorities, geared up before and during the British royal’s trips to American soil. The IRA was a paramilitary organization that sought to bring an end to British rule in Northern Ireland and unify the island under a single government. The group often used violent means to achieve their goals. Considering the monarchy’s complex relationship with … [Read more...] about FBI Releases Files Showing ‘Ever-Present’ Threats Against Queen Elizabeth II

FBI files on Queen Elizabeth’s visits show ‘everpresent’ threats from IRA
Before Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to San Francisco in 1983, a city police officer who regularly patronized an Irish pub warned federal agents about a potential threat against Her Majesty by an Irish Republican Army sympathizer who was bent on revenge for the death of his daughter, newly released FBI records show. The unidentified police officer claimed that on Feb. 4, 1983 — about a month before Ronald and Nancy Reagan hosted the visit from the queen and Prince Philip — he received a phone call from a man he knew from the pub “who claimed that his daughter had been killed in Northern Ireland by a rubber bullet,” according to a confidential FBI teletype. “This man additionally claimed that he was going to attempt to harm Queen Elizabeth and would do this either by dropping some object off the Golden Gate Bridge onto the royal yacht Britannia when it sails underneath, or would attempt to kill Queen Elizabeth when she visited Yosemite National Park,” the memo states. Where Everybody Knows Your Name
LAST CALL AT COOGAN’S: The Life and Death of a Neighborhood Bar , by Jon Michaud “A friend to me has no race, no class and belongs to no minority,” said Frank Sinatra. “My friendships are formed out of affection, mutual respect and a feeling of having something in common. These are eternal values that cannot be classified.” These words ran through my head as I read “Last Call at Coogan’s,” Jon Michaud’s book about the life and times of a venerated Washington Heights pub that shuttered in 2020. It might have been the motto of Coogan’s — a spot that may have resembled an Irish tavern of the sort found from Mumbai to Manhattan, but was a unique place, ecumenical in outlook and bighearted in practice. Coogan’s opened in 1985, in northern Manhattan’s heavily Dominican enclave of Washington Heights, at the onset of one epidemic — crack — and closed during another. In its brief life, Coogan’s became a landmark as vital to the health of a diverse neighborhood as the nearby hospital, … [Read more...] about Where Everybody Knows Your Name
Beyond Bodrum, a Boom in Turkish Waterfront Homes
With its expansive, scenic coastlines, abundance of historical sights and excellent cuisine, Turkey has been a consistently popular destination for international investment in its waterfront homes. Besides its beaches, the country attracts foreign buyers with its affordability, high quality of life and diversity of real-estate options, said Michael Valdes, the chief growth officer and president of the real estate firm eXp Realty, which does not have a presence in Turkey. Until recently, much of the investment and attention have focused on the city of Bodrum and the towns on the surrounding peninsula in the southwestern part of the country, which, he said, were “the top spots in Turkey to buy a waterfront property by far.” But while Bodrum’s robust real estate market has not waned, buyers were increasingly seeking homes in lesser-known waterfront locales in Turkey and in surrounding areas, international real estate experts said. Kusadasi, Kalkan and Northern Cyprus, in … [Read more...] about Beyond Bodrum, a Boom in Turkish Waterfront Homes
