(AP) — Recreational marijuana sales in Missouri officially began Friday after the state health department unexpectedly began approving dispensary permits early. Medical marijuana has been legal in the state since a ballot measure passed in 2018, but voters went a step further this November by approving a constitutional amendment legalizing the drug for anyone 21 or older. The new law made Missouri the 21st state to allow recreational use. Under the amendment, non-medicinal pot use became legal in the state in December. But sales were stalled because the health department had until Friday to issue business licenses. Almost all of the state's medical marijuana dispensaries applied to sell recreational pot, according to Lisa Cox, spokeswoman for the Department of Health and Senior Services. Of the medical marijuana facilities that applied to … [Read more...] about Legal recreational pot sales begin for Missouri adults

THE PHILOSOPHER GEORGE SANTAYANA was once asked which books young people should read. It didn't matter, he replied, as long as they read the same ones. Generations of Eng. lit. majors in American colleges followed his advice. You started with the Bible, moved briskly through Beowulf and Chaucer, Shakespeare and Milton, the 18th-century novel, the Romantics, a few big American books like … [Read more...] about ON CAMPUS: THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS
A Return to Nordic Roots
MINNEAPOLIS THERE’S no escaping Scandinavian heritage in the Twin Cities. At every turn, there’s a billboard for Norwegian language-immersion camp or a “Drool if You’re Finnish” baby bib for sale. But in food terms, it’s long been easier to get an authentic taco al pastor, Thai green curry or a grass-fed beef slider than a good kanel snegl (cinnamon roll). There hasn’t been a successful Scandinavian restaurant here since 2003, when Aquavit, a slick expense-account-fueled import from Midtown Manhattan, closed after a lackluster run. “When I was growing up, if we wanted to have meatballs and lingonberries, we had to go to Ikea,” said Kathryn Anderson, a student at the University of Minnesota. “That’s how bad it was.” There are plenty of good restaurants in the Twin Cities: at least one great Mexican tamale joint (La Loma), several Vietnamese pho specialists and storefronts that cater to the cities’ large Somali and Hmong communities. Several upscale places, like Tilia, Heartland … [Read more...] about A Return to Nordic Roots
The Ecstatic, Elusive Art of Ming Smith
In 1979, the artist Ming Smith arrived at New York’s Museum of Modern Art with a portfolio of her photographs. She had been living in the city for a few years, nurturing her obsession with photography, when she heard that the museum had announced an open call for submissions. As Smith walked into the building, prints in tow, the receptionist thought she was a messenger. A few days later, the department of photography’s then chief curator, John Szarkowski, and assistant curator Susan Kismaric bought two of Smith’s pieces, making her the first Black woman photographer to have her works acquired by the museum. Even before gaining institutional recognition, Smith had faith in her art. “I didn’t care if I fit in,” she said to me in her quiet, Midwestern-inflected voice. “Photography was my sacred space.” It was an overcast day in January, and we were sitting in Smith’s home studio, a compact apartment in a tall residential building in central Harlem, surrounded by her work. … [Read more...] about The Ecstatic, Elusive Art of Ming Smith

Ex-NFL player Zac Stacy enters plea deal in domestic violence case
An Orange County judge accepted a plea deal Thursday and set a sentencing date in the case of Zac Stacy, a former NFL football player who was arrested in late 2021 after he was caught beating the mother of his child in a viral video. Stacy, 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal mischief, according to records filed in the Ninth Judicial Circuit. In exchange for meeting requirements including no contact with the victim, his felony battery charges will be dropped. Stacy faces up to 120 days in jail and a maximum fine of $6,000, court records said. In November 2021, a video of Stacy attacking the mother of his then-infant son went viral after it was shared online by the victim. Days later, the former running back for the St. Louis Rams and New York Jets was arrested at Orlando International Airport as he exited a flight from Nashville. In the viral video shared with investigators, Stacy was seen knocking the woman to the ground and throwing her into a nearby … [Read more...] about Ex-NFL player Zac Stacy enters plea deal in domestic violence case
