A month after the California Department of Public Health issued a statewide standing order for naloxone, the emergency antidote for opioid overdoses, the agency has authorized 27 organizations across the state — mostly pharmacies and addiction treatment centers — to distribute and administer the medication without a prescription. The order was issued by agency director Dr. Karen Smith on June 8. Previously, organizations needed a prescription from an individual physician in order to distribute naloxone. Smith’s order functions as a standing prescription for organizations that have a hard time finding such a doctor — a problem in small and rural communities where physician shortages are common, and addiction medicine is outside the purview of many doctors’ practices. “It’s one step in our multifaceted approach to increasing ready access to naloxone,” Smith said in an interview last month about the order. Among those newly authorized to … [Read more...] about More California pharmacies to distribute opioid overdose drug

Checkup Denver: Opioid pills flow in Colorado, hepatitis A outbreak and more Colorado health news
Hello Colorado! I’m in Los Angeles today as part of my fellowship with USC Annenberg’s Center for Health Journalism. Through the fellowship, I will report on the rise of youth suicide in Colorado, including how the issue is affecting communities across the state and whether enough is being done to help teens. Among the hardest-hit counties was Alamosa County, which saw more than 9.4 … [Read more...] about Checkup Denver: Opioid pills flow in Colorado, hepatitis A outbreak and more Colorado health news
Pelosi’s hidden message to Trump
Sign up to get our new weekly column as a newsletter. We're looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. (CNN)In Shakespeare's tragedy, the armored ghost of Hamlet's father stalks the ramparts of the royal castle, with a face cast "more in sorrow than in anger." Such was the expression of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi as she walked to the podium in front of American flags Thursday to announce that Democrats would draft articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. She invoked the Declaration of Independence and complimented her colleagues "for their somber approach" to a process that Pelosi herself had long resisted. Yet the nation saw another facet of the Speaker's character just hours later when a reporter asked, "Do you hate the President, Madam Speaker?" She shot back, "I don't hate anybody," citing her Catholic upbringing and warned, "Don't mess with me." Read More Those words, wrote Pelosi biographer Elaine … [Read more...] about Pelosi’s hidden message to Trump
Dahlberg: Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury step up in heavyweight title fight
Just how well Deontay Wilder’s heavyweight title defense Saturday night against Tyson Fury in Los Angeles will do at the box office is a question mark. For all the power in his right hand, Wilder is still trying to build his brand and Fury is largely an enigma in the U.S. What it means for boxing’s most prestigious division, though, is easy to quantify. The winner gets a glittering championship belt, of course, that signifies he is the baddest man on the planet — at least in the parts of the planet that currently recognize Wilder as the reigning heavyweight champion. And that’s still a big deal because even though the heavyweight division hasn’t been good in recent times, it’s brimming with talent right now. But the real prize will likely come sometime next year, assuming common sense prevails as it often doesn’t in boxing. That means a fight matching the Wilder-Fury winner with Anthony Joshua, the British puncher who currently holds the other … [Read more...] about Dahlberg: Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury step up in heavyweight title fight
