Las Vegas prepares to welcome Raiders, but is it a bad bet?
LAS VEGAS — When Sheryl Thornton-Burnham moved to Las Vegas in 1995, she didn’t think the Raiders would someday follow. Thornton-Burnham had worked for the Raiders for several years in Los Angeles. She was aware of the NFL’s long resistance to basing a team in Las Vegas, a hub for legal sports gambling. Now, however, Thornton-Burnham need only look at the framework of the nearly $2 billion stadium going up near the Strip to be reminded that in less than a year, this city will become the new home of the Raiders, who are playing out their expected final season in Oakland. “People are excited,” said Thornton-Burnham, who leads a Raiders booster club here. “There are people who are not Raider fans who are still excited about it because they know what the influx of a team will do for a city. “Las Vegas is turning into a world-class city. With new grant program, Bay Area spreads electric cars to low-income drivers
Standing beside his new car, a 2016 Ford C-Max hybrid with an eggshell-white exterior, Ignacio Hernandez beams. Charge the electric battery and it glides for 200 miles, swooshing along the Interstate 880 and Interstate 580 freeways from Hernandez’s home in East Oakland to his job managing a Burger King in Dublin. It purrs so quietly that Hernandez barely hears the motor, and in the long run, it will save him money: His old car, a sputtering, 1996 Toyota Camry, cost thousands of dollars a year for gas and repairs. But purchasing a hybrid was unthinkable until Hernandez got a $9,500 grant from Bay Area Air Quality Management District, through a program that aims to make clean-air vehicles accessible to low-income Californians. “Definitely cost is one of the biggest barriers to getting people in these vehicles,” said Rebecca Fisher, a program manager at the district who is helping steer Clean Cars for All. Funded with state climate investments and money from a one-time … [Read more...] about With new grant program, Bay Area spreads electric cars to low-income drivers

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — An executive with Netflix says the streaming giant has boosted its original content exponentially over the last several years and that will mean more action for its production hub in New Mexico, where state officials have been busy trying to woo more big partners in the industry. (AP Photo/Susan Montoya Bryan) Nick Maniatis, who ran the state’s film office before going to work for Netflix, spoke to a group of hundreds of business leaders and elected officials who were gathered Thursday in Albuquerque. He described it as a “golden era,” saying the amount of content that’s out there is amazing. “A year ago you could say all the major studios — take Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, Fox, all of them combined — would do about 300 or 400 projects a year. This year, we will do 1,000 … [Read more...] about Los Gatos-Based Netflix Leads Rush to Build Moviemaking Mecca in New Mexico
