KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (CBS) — A big day at Longwood Gardens. Its $250 million expansion project gets underway today. It’s hard to imagine, but Longwood Gardens is about to get bigger, better and even more beautiful. READ MORE: Thieves Steal ATM From West Philadelphia Laundromat “There’s no other conservatory in the world like this,” Longwood Gardens President and CEO Paul Redman said. Longwood Gardens is embarking on what it’s calling its most ambitious project in a century — $250 million to transform 17 acres of gardens. And at the center of it all, this crystalline glasshouse, the size of a football field. Glasshouse “Or, as I like to call it, the ‘Crystal Palace,’” Redman said. Redman recently walked Eyewitness News through the breathtaking vision. “It’s going to be a unique structure that’s going to be like floating on water,” Redman said. “There’s going to be a series of canals and islands. When you walk into this new conservatory, it’s going to be like walking into a grand cathedral in Europe or something.” The project is called Longwood: Reimagined. And it’s meant to expand and revitalize what’s now the west side of the conservatory. The colorful Acacia Passage and neighboring Silver Garden will remain, but everything west of that will be fenced off starting March 1. “It’s about horticulture and education and just enjoyment,” Redman said. The plan also calls for new classroom space and a restaurant with spectacular views of the main fountain garden. “So, imagine having lunch at Versailles, and being able to see the waters dance and perform within a beautiful garden,” Redman said. “That will be our new restaurant.” Those parts are expected to open by 2024. Sen. Cotton: Pelosi’s $1.9 Trillion Stimulus Bill ‘Swamp Looking After Itself’
During an appearance on FNC’s “Fox & Friends,” Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) slammed the $1.9 trillion spending bill passed by the House of Representatives. He deemed it the “swamp looking after itself.” “One reason I think Joe Biden thinks there’s no time to waste is that Democrats can see cases have plummeted since early January,” he said. “They can see that we now have three effective vaccines, and vaccination rates are surging. So, I think they’re worried they won’t have the coronavirus as an excuse to pay off all of their clients and patrons in a $1.9 trillion blowout bill. As you said, less than a dime of every dollar goes to the coronavirus.” “Just take a look at the payoff of some of their constituencies, $350 billion for states that are poorly run and that have long-standing problems but didn’t even lose money because of the coronavirus, places like California and New York,” Cotton continued. “A hundred and thirty billion dollars for schools but only a nickel of that money — of each dollar of that money is going to be spent this year. Most of it is for future years. Again, paying off teachers’ unions.” “And then maybe the worst of all, the worst of all, they’re going to give a lot of Americans a $1,400 check,” he added. “Federal employees are going to get that same check. They are also going to get $1,400 a week — a week, every single week if their kids aren’t in school. So, if you’re working in the middle of the country, hard to make a living, you get one $1,400 payment once. If you’re a federal bureaucrat in Washington, where your schools are still closed, you get it every single week. Talk about the swamp looking after itself.” Follow Jeff Poor on Twitter @jeff_poor ...
‘It’s Coming Out Of His Ears’: Juan Williams Says Trump’s CPAC Speech Is Proof He’s ‘Just Jealous’ Of Biden
Juan Williams said Monday that former President Donald Trump’s speech at the Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) was proof that he was “jealous” of President Joe Biden. Williams reacted to Trump’s speech — during which the former president had taken aim at a number of Biden’s policy changes — on Fox News’ “The Five.” (RELATED: ‘Breaking Up With The American Public’: Greg Gutfeld Says Biden Is Ditching US For ‘Hot New Exotic Partner, The World’) WATCH: Cohost Greg Gutfeld began the segment with sarcasm, saying that he was certain Williams had been up all night excited to hear Trump speak. (RELATED: ‘That Wasn’t Cool’: Jesse Watters Rebukes Juan Williams For Suggesting His Cohosts Stood With Capitol Mob) “You were just so excited. I think I overheard you saying the green room it was the greatest speech you ever heard,” Gutfeld joked. “It was a rerun. I have heard that speech before,” Williams replied, saying that he hadn’t heard Trump say anything new . He went on to criticize Trump for continuing to claim that he won the 2020 presidential election, arguing that it was the root cause of the Capitol riot and division within the Republican Party. “Here’s a list of people in the Republican Party to go after, the people who told the truth about not only the election but what happened on Jan. 6. I think he’s promoting, again, you know, more division not only in the country but in the party,” Williams continued. “That’s really difficult because obviously people in the country are worried about more violence coming. That’s why we still have the fencing around the Capitol and all of that.” Williams’ conclusion was that Trump had truly revealed himself in the comments he made about about President Biden. “It seems to me like he’s jealous. It seems to me like he’s jealous about the idea that Biden is having success. The COVID infection rate, the death rate’s going down. He’s jealous about the idea that the vaccines ...
COVID 1-Year: A Look Back On What’s Been Lost And How Tri-State Has Persevered
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — The devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been felt around the globe. More than 114 million cases have been reported worldwide, and 2.5 million deaths. The United States has seen 28 million of those cases, and more than half a million people have died. That’s higher than American death tolls for World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War combined. In New York City, there are more than 600,000 confirmed cases, and nearly 25,000 deaths. The city was one of the first hard hit in the country. From March to May, it was the epicenter of the virus. As CBS2’s Aundrea Cline-Thomas reported, it was a devastating period that changed the city profoundly. FLASHBACK: Health Care Worker Tests Positive After Returning From Iran, Husband Awaiting Results The first COVID patient in the Tri-State Area was a 39-year-old health care worker who had recently returned from a trip overseas. She recovered at home. Medical professionals and politicians had been preparing for that moment, but at the time, no one truly knew what was in store. “We didn’t go to any places, cooked food at home and everything. It was very scary times,” Astoria resident Marianna Obushko told Cline-Thomas. “I don’t know how much more graphic we could be… Go past a hospital — a neighborhood hospital here, Mt. Sinai — and see the morgue tractor trailer.” By the time the first reported case of the coronavirus was identified in March of 2020, the virus was already spreading, unknowingly, in the Tri-State Area. “I already knew it was coming. I already bought masks. I told all of my American friends. Nobody wanted to believe me,” Astoria resident Joanne Wang said. “We have told New Yorkers from the beginning: Get ready, here it comes, we’re all going to be able to deal with it together,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said on March 2, 2020. Will ‘Cover-up Cuomo’ be marching to ‘Jail to the Chief’?
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo Andrew Cuomo Cuomo apologizes over allegations, calls for NY AG to tap lawyer for independent probe New York AG says Cuomo statement is not sufficient for independent investigation Cuomo asks New York AG to appoint independent attorney to investigate sexual harassment claims MORE (D) has probably long thought that one day he would be – indeed, should be – entering a room to the sound of “Hail to the Chief.” Now it looks more likely that music will be “Jail to the Chief.” There is growing Democratic criticism of the governor’s handling – or should we say “mishandling”? – of the coronavirus pandemic, in which perhaps thousands of seniors in New York nursing homes died needlessly due to Cuomo’s ill-fated policies, followed by a cover-up. Now Democrats are accusing Cuomo of strongarming them for raising concerns. Even New York Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is supporting an investigation into his nursing home fiasco. ADVERTISEMENT Democratic criticism gives the mainstream media permission to investigate Cuomo, which they are finally beginning to do. For example, there has been widespread media coverage of comments made by his top aide, Melissa DeRosa, who reportedly apologized to Democratic lawmakers for the governor’s cover-up. Reports quote her as saying , “And basically, we froze. Because then we were in a position where we weren’t sure if what we were going to give to the Department of Justice, or what we give to you guys, what we start saying, was going to be used against us while we weren’t sure if there was going to be an investigation.” Isn’t obstruction of justice a crime? In addition, the media are picking up on the accusation of sexual assault by a former top Cuomo aide, Lindsey Boylan. She made the accusation in December. But now she has written about it , and the newly unchained media appear ready to cover the issue. When asked about the accusation, most leading ...
