The Massachusetts House on Wednesday passed a measure that would protect abortion and “gender-affirming care.” “Access to reproductive health care services and gender-affirming health care services is recognized and declared to be a right secured by the constitution or laws of the commonwealth,” the bill reads in part, deeming interference with those “rights” as something “against the public policy of the commonwealth.” The passage of the bill follows several state Democrat lawmakers taking to the floor to argue in favor of the pro-abortion measure. “Let’s be very clear: the Supreme Court’s decision is rooted in misogyny,” state Rep. Marjorie Decker (D) asserted . “The motivation behind that is about ensuring that women and those who need access to reproductive health care no longer have control over their bodies.” However, the Supreme Court’s 5-4 ruling did not ban abortion but instead kicked the decision back to individual states. “We therefore hold that the … [Read more...] about Massachusetts House Passes Bill Protecting Abortion and ‘Gender-Affirming Care’

Biden backs filibuster exception to protect abortion access
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden said Thursday that he would support an exception to the Senate filibuster to protect abortion access, a shift that comes as Democrats coalesce around an election-year message intended to rally voters who are outraged or deflated by the Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Although Democrats already control the Senate by the narrowest of margins, there isn’t enough support within their caucus to change the filibuster rule, which allows any member to block legislation unless it receives 60 votes. But Biden’s statement was the latest indication that, if the party picks up a few more seats in the midterm elections in November, Democrats could seize the opportunity to pass legislation creating a nationwide right to abortion. “If the filibuster gets in the way, it’s like voting rights,” Biden said, referencing the rare … [Read more...] about Biden backs filibuster exception to protect abortion access

Daily Montanan , News Partner Posted Reply Daily Montanan March 13, 2022 Vulnerable lawmakers from throughout the country are set to rake in federal cash for home-state projects after a major spending bill included the first round of earmarks in more than a decade. Members from both political parties began requesting thousands of projects last year when U.S. House and Senate leaders resurrected what’s called “member-directed spending” — resulting in billions of dollars in earmarks spread across Congress. Leaders also overhauled the process with new oversight mechanisms and guardrails to prevent the type of scandals that plagued the earmarks process — known derisively as “pork-barrel spending” — in years past. Based on the flood of celebrations, tweets and press … [Read more...] about Return Of Earmarks A Boon For Members Of Congress Facing Midterm Battles
