As prices for energy, food and commodities rise after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the impact is being felt sharply around the world. In Britain, the central bank pushed interest rates to their highest level in 13 years on Thursday, in an effort to arrest rapidly rising prices even as the risk of recession is growing. The bank predicted that inflation would rise to its highest level in four decades in the final quarter of this year, and that the British economy would shrink by nearly 1 percent. “Global inflationary pressures have intensified sharply in the buildup to and following the invasion,” Andrew Bailey, the governor of the Bank of England, said on Thursday. “This has led to a material deterioration in the outlook,” he added, for both the global and British economies. On an annual basis, the economy would also shrink next year. The Bank of England raised interest rates to 1 percent from 0.75 percent, their highest level since 2009. HART: We Just Visited Mother England. It’s Just Like America, So Much So It Has A Woke Left
We just visited Mother England. It is just like America, only whiter. I went there with eight buddies. All together we were whiter than a Dave Matthews concert in a snowstorm. One of the guys from Georgia on the trip (an accomplished drunk named Fortnight who slept multiple nights in his roommate’s shower with the water running) keenly observed, “From what I’ve seen in movies, I really thought we would have met more chimney sweeps in England.” We played golf for five days. The weather was nice, in the 50s each day. It never dipped into the teens or, as it should be called here, “Prince Andrew weather.” The exchange rate for the pound sterling is about 1.3 pounds to the U.S dollar. It is the same for women. A woman in the USA who is a 7 would be about a 9 here. Their currency is stronger than ours, but our women are much stronger than theirs. The exchange rate on women in the UK goes long way in explaining how Queen Camilla got King Charles. Kudos to American women — … [Read more...] about HART: We Just Visited Mother England. On May 29th Remember Oak Apple Day, England’s Non-Socialist May Day
Once a year, Britons celebrate the rejection of dour political extremism while honouring tradition and history by wearing a sprig of oak. Oak Apple Day, celebrated by pockets of traditional Britain every year on May 29th, memorialises the incredible escape from an England gripped by revolutionary turmoil of a prince. Narrowly avoiding capture by the forces of radical extremist Oliver Cromwell — according to legend by hiding in an oak tree — that would later execute his father, Charles II was later able to return to England to reclaim his throne. Repealing interregnum-era laws that severely restricted life, Charles was known as the ‘Merry Monarch’ for the return of things like unfettered celebrations of Christmas and theatre plays. Tom Brady Reaches Agreement to Buy Ownership Stake in Raiders
It was long speculated that Tom Brady would one day be a player for the Las Vegas Raiders. Well, he will be a part of the Silver & Black. But he’s going to be an owner, not a player. On Monday, Raiders Owner Mark Davis announced that Brady, a future Hall of Fame quarterback and future broadcaster for Fox Sports (probably), was set to become a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders. “We’re excited for Tom to join the Raiders,” Davis told ESPN, “and it’s exciting because he will be just the third player in the history of the National Football League to become an owner.” Owner and managing general partner Mark Davis of the Las Vegas Raiders looks on before a game against the Kansas City Chiefs at Allegiant Stadium on January 07, 2023, in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Chris Unger/Getty Images) According to ESPN, the other two players turned owners are George Halas (Bears) and Jerry Richardson (Panthers). The business arrangement represents a “Circle of Life” for Brady. After … [Read more...] about Tom Brady Reaches Agreement to Buy Ownership Stake in Raiders
James Acaster Finds His Way Back to Music
The British comedian James Acaster can remember the moment he fell in love with music at 6 years old. At a party held by a member of the congregation of the “hippie-ish” church his parents attended in Kettering, a town in central England, he heard a compilation album featuring songs like Men at Work’s “ Down Under ” and “ Centerfold ” by The J. Geils Band. “I just couldn’t believe how good every single song was — it was blowing my mind,” Acaster said in a recent video interview. Music became “a pretty immediate obsession.” By the time he was a teenager, Acaster was playing in several bands. He left school at 17, without taking his final exams, and didn’t go to college, so he could focus on building a career in music. At 22, though, he didn’t have a record deal, and when his experimental jazz group split, Acaster started focusing on comedy instead. He had been dabbling in stand-up as a side project since he was 18, and it felt like a welcome break from the pressures of trying … [Read more...] about James Acaster Finds His Way Back to Music
Ketamine Shows Promise for Hard-to-Treat Depression in New Study
A new study suggests that, for some patients, the anesthetic ketamine is a promising alternative to electroconvulsive therapy, or ECT, currently one of the quickest and most effective therapies for patients with difficult-to-treat depression. The study is the largest head-to-head comparison of the two treatments. Patients who don’t respond to at least two antidepressants — about one-third of clinically depressed patients — have a condition that clinicians refer to as “treatment-resistant.” Their options for relief are limited. Doctors typically recommend up to 12 sessions of ECT, which has a long-established efficacy , but is tainted by the stigma of historical misuse and frightening Hollywood images of people strapped to tables, writhing in agony. Today’s ECT is much safer and done under general anesthesia, but the procedure remains underutilized. The study, published on Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine, found that ketamine, when administered … [Read more...] about Ketamine Shows Promise for Hard-to-Treat Depression in New Study
