Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. tried to nudge Republicans into taking up a domestic terrorism bill that had cleared the House quickly last week after mass shootings at a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, and a church in Southern California targeting people of color. He said it could become the basis for negotiation. But the vote failed nearly along party lines, raising fresh doubts about the possibility of robust debate, let alone eventual compromise, on gun safety measures. The Evanston sophomore found another pitch for his arsenal. Vega utilized a 2-seam fastball he "discovered" in a bullpen session a couple of days ago and combined with Owen Brooks for a 1-hit shutout as the Wildkits blanked Leyden 7-0 in an Illinois High School Association Class 4A regional baseball tournament game held at Northwestern University. Alex Vasquez drove in 5 runs to help ETHS improve to 20-9 on the season. With the win, Evanston advances to the championship game of the ETHS Regional against either Prospect or Von Steuben. Hanson Aggregates Quarry in McCook and La Grange are expected to see each other in Cook County Circuit Court starting July 18. "Now, it will be up to the judge to decide," Village President Mark Kuchler said at Monday's Village Board meeting. "Our attorneys are working hard. They are truly moving into the sprint phase." In the next couple of weeks, the village's former engineer will undergo a deposition and the village will answer a subpoena for documents, Kuchler said. As for the subpoena, the village plans to also post the released records on its website, he said. The theater plans to show "Top Gun: Maverick" over the Memorial Day weekend. The new operator is Downers Grove-based Classic Cinemas, which runs a chain of theaters in the Chicago area. Not all of the La Grange Theatre's auditoriums will be open at the beginning, but they should be ready by July, Classic's CEO, Chris Johnson, said Monday. "We have our inspections Wednesday," Johnson told the Village Board. "If all goes well, we'll be in good shape and be ready to go for 'Top Gun.'"
