The inclusion of the Church of Scientology in the rape retrial of Danny Masterson was slammed by the organization after the actor was found guilty Wednesday. Masterson, 47, was found guilty on two counts of forcible rape. The jury was hung on a third charge. A jury of seven men and five women deliberated for eight days before reaching the verdicts. The former "That 70s Show" star was accused of drugging the victims' drinks in order to rape them. Throughout the trial, each victim claimed Masterson used his prominence in the church — where all three women were also members at the time — to avoid consequences for decades. The Adams Administration Has a New Policy for Jail Deaths: Cover-up

Photo: Andrew Lichtenstein/Corbis via Getty Images The City reported on Thursday that the New York City Department of Correction will no longer notify the media when a person dies while incarcerated, ending a consistent process that has been in effect for two years. “That was a practice, not a policy,” Frank Dwyer, the department’s new spokesman, told the outlet. The Legal Aid Society, the city’s largest provider of public defense, slammed the move in a statement: “This is another lowlight in the Department of Correction’s campaign to keep outside eyes away from the catastrophe that is the city’s jail system and the harm it inflicts daily on New Yorkers trapped inside its deadly walls.” The city’s shift in approach came to light following the deaths of two inmates on Rikers Island in recent weeks that the DOC did not publicize. The deaths were among five incidents mentioned in a … [Read more...] about The Adams Administration Has a New Policy for Jail Deaths: Cover-up
Ja Morant Gun Investigation Results Delayed During N.B.A. Finals
N.B.A. Commissioner Adam Silver on Thursday said that the league would wait until the conclusion of the finals to announce the findings of its latest investigation into the behavior of Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant, as well as any potential discipline of him. On May 13, Morant appeared to brandish a firearm in public for the second time in just over two months , prompting the investigation. Silver declined to say whether Morant would be available to play for the Grizzlies at the start of next season. “I would say we probably could’ve brought it to a head now,” Silver said at a news conference in Denver before Game 1 of the championship series between the Nuggets and the Miami Heat. “But we made the decision, and I believe the players’ association agrees with us, that it would be unfair to these players and these teams in the middle of the series to announce the results of that investigation.” Morant is a two-time All-Star and already one of the league’s most … [Read more...] about Ja Morant Gun Investigation Results Delayed During N.B.A. Finals
MAGA World Dismisses Ken Paxton Impeachment As Political Persecution
Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images Back in the 1950s, there was an ethically challenged governor of my home state of Georgia who would defend himself against frequent charges of corruption by accusing his critics of trying to undermine Jim Crow laws, of which he was a loud champion. One journalist referred to this argument as: “If you ain’t for stealin’, you ain’t for segregation!” I thought of this precedent upon reading about the impeachment of Texas attorney general Ken Paxton by the Texas House for a remarkable array of improprieties, which has led him to mobilize his MAGA allies to launch a highly ideological defense, as the Texas Tribune reports : One day after a Texas House committee recommended that Attorney General Ken Paxton be impeached, several prominent Republicans pressed a common strategy Friday: attack, attack, attack. In statements and social media posts, conservatives accused their fellow Republicans in the Texas House — Speaker Dade … [Read more...] about MAGA World Dismisses Ken Paxton Impeachment As Political Persecution
