Establishment Using Abortion to Distract from ‘Out of Control’ Immigration
Populist firebrand Marine Le Pen has alleged that discussions on abortion in France, seemingly prompted by the recent Supreme Court decision in the United States, are being used to distract from the more domestically relevant issue of mass immigration. Heated mainstream discussion in France surrounding the right to an abortion is being used to distract from the issue of widespread immigration into the country, populist leader Marine Le Pen has alleged. With the overruling of Roe v. Wade in the United States, politicians from French President Emmanual Macron’s La République En Marche have expressed a desire to enshrine abortion in the French constitution seemingly in the hopes of preventing future pro-life legislatures from easily clamping down on the practice. However, according to a report by Le Figaro , Rassemblement National’s new parliamentary leader and long-time populist firebrand Marine Le Pen has lambasted such a move as a mere distraction from the real issues of … [Read more...] about Establishment Using Abortion to Distract from ‘Out of Control’ Immigration
Annie Lennox beguiled us in the MTV age. Now she calms us down online.
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 LOS ANGELES - The day she found out that her group Eurythmics had its first No. 1 single in America, Annie Lennox was at a hotel in San Francisco. The hotel was Japanese-inspired, and its windows appeared to have a rice-paper-like translucency. Lennox was already beginning to struggle with the early onset of fame-related anxiety, and this didn't help. "It felt like I had nowhere to hide," Lennox says now. "I was so conscious of earthquakes, because I had never really been to San Francisco before. Maybe once. And I was just thinking, 'Oh my God, I feel so vulnerable. Now we've got rice-paper windows and earthquakes happening.' It was like being naked in front of the world." The single that kick-started the duo's pathbreaking, almost decade-long run up the pop charts - the galvanic synth-pop classic "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" - will turn 40 next year. In the run-up … [Read more...] about Annie Lennox beguiled us in the MTV age. Now she calms us down online.
Mortgage rates held in check as recession fears mount
After being prodded higher by inflation fears, mortgage rates were dragged down this week by recession concerns. According to the latest data released Thursday by Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate average dropped to 5.7% with an average 0.9 point. (A point is a fee paid to a lender equal to 1% of the loan amount. It is in addition to the interest rate.) It was 5.81% a week ago and 2.98% a year ago. Freddie Mac, the federally chartered mortgage investor, aggregates rates from around 80 lenders across the country to come up with weekly national averages. The survey is based on home purchase mortgages. Rates for refinances may be different. It uses rates for high-quality borrowers with strong credit scores and large down payments. Because of the criteria, these rates are not available to every borrower. The 15-year fixed-rate average also moved lower, falling to 4.83% with an average 0.9 point. It was 4.92% a week ago and 2.26% a year ago. The five-year adjustable rate average … [Read more...] about Mortgage rates held in check as recession fears mount
For Barnabé Fillion, Fragrance Is a Multisensory Affair
Despite nearly drowning in a pool when he was 3 or 4, the perfumer Barnabé Fillion tries to take a swim in Paris, where he’s based for part of each year, whenever he feels a headache coming on. “Water, for me, is a way to transform,” says Fillion, 41, who has synesthesia, a condition in which one’s senses are cross-wired: In Fillion’s case, he experiences images and sounds as textures. “If I’m really saturated, water will help me. There’s something about it that makes me feel light and happy and fuzzy.” His latest scent, Manta, is meant to evoke the sensation of being underwater. It’s the fourth fragrance from Arpa , the brand Fillion launched last year, its offerings recognizable by their colored glass bottles, which are handblown by the artist Jochen Holz . Unlike the line’s other scents, however, which were inspired by memorable destinations to which Fillion has traveled — the Dallol region of Ethiopia, a Belgian forest and the hot springs of … [Read more...] about For Barnabé Fillion, Fragrance Is a Multisensory Affair
