For years, members of the Native American community say they were deeply suspicious of Nathan Chasing Horse. “It was, ‘Make sure you never leave a young woman alone with this person,’” Frances Danger, who is Muskogee and Seminole, told The Daily Beast. “It was never an exact allegation of specific things, but we knew. We knew.” Chasing Horse, who gained a modicum of fame as the character Smiles a Lot in the 1990 Kevin Costner blockbuster Dances with Wolves , now stands accused of running a cult through which he raped and trafficked multiple women and girls for two decades. Lingering fears about the former movie star’s behavior appeared to have been validated Tuesday, when police announced they had arrested Chasing Horse, 46, at his home in North Las Vegas. On Thursday, he appeared in court. Prosecutors said they expect to charge Chasing Horse with sex trafficking, sexual assault, and child abuse, among other possible counts. Chasing Horse was ordered held without bail through … [Read more...] about ‘We Knew’: Behind the ‘Dances With Wolves’ Star’s Sickening Sex Cult Arrest

Former pop star Gary Glitter released from U.K. prison halfway through sentence for sexual abuse
LONDON — Former pop star Gary Glitter was released from prison in England on Friday after serving half of a 16-year prison sentence for sexually abusing three young girls in the 1970s. The 79-year-old singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was freed from a prison in Dorset, in southwest England. It is common for offenders in the U.K. to be freed halfway through their sentences and then be placed on probation. “Sex offenders like Paul Gadd are closely monitored by the police and Probation Service and face some of the strictest license conditions, including being fitted with a GPS tag,” the Ministry of Justice said in a statement. “If the offender breaches these conditions at any point, they can go back behind bars.” The singer was found guilty of one count of attempted rape, four counts of indecent assault and one count of sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13. Glitter was arrested in October 2012 under Operation Yewtree, the national investigation launched … [Read more...] about Former pop star Gary Glitter released from U.K. prison halfway through sentence for sexual abuse

IN EARLY SUMMER, I PAID TWO VISITS TO Harold Bloom, the eminent literary critic famous for his prodigious intellectual energy. On both occasions, he seemed intent on staging a deathbed scene. Collapsed on a reclining armchair, brow furrowed, mouth sour, the 64-year-old Bloom looked worse than pained. "The battle is lost," he whispered. "These resentniks have destroyed the canon." … [Read more...] about Colossus Among Critics; Harold Bloom
‘For the Common Good of Humankind’
Edmund Burke is enjoying a remarkable revival for a British statesman who has been dead since 1797. The last 18 months or so have brought books by Jesse Norman, Yuval Levin and Drew Maciag — a member of Parliament and two American scholars — placing him in the context of political traditions that endure to this day. Their subtitles tell the story: Burke is “The First Conservative” (Norman) or “The Father of Modern Conservatism” (Maciag) or present at “The Birth of Right and Left” (Levin). In “The Intellectual Life of Edmund Burke: From the Sublime and Beautiful to American Independence,” David Bromwich explores another facet of this complex thinker: “I write about Burke as a moral psychologist.” Bromwich, a Sterling professor of English at Yale, gives us a figure who may be unknown to readers familiar with Burke only from “Reflections on the Revolution in France” or his reputation as modern conservatism’s founding father. Bromwich’s Burke is one for whom “ordinary feelings such as … [Read more...] about ‘For the Common Good of Humankind’
Sasha Petraske, 42, Dies; Bar Owner Restored Luster to Cocktail Culture
Sasha Petraske, who helped restore lost luster to the venerable cocktail as the founder of the New York cocktail bar Milk & Honey and other polished drinking spots around the world, was found dead on Friday morning at his home in Hudson, N.Y. He was 42. His wife, Georgette Moger, said he had died overnight. The cause had not been determined, she said. Mr. Petraske’s role in the modern cocktail revival is difficult to overstate. The opening of Milk & Honey in 1999, in a narrow space on a dark, little populated block of the Lower East Side, has been called instrumental in the revival of cocktail culture across United States and beyond. Though unmarked and unadvertised, Milk & Honey became a phenomenon, known for its unapologetic dedication to expertly crafted, pre-Prohibition era cocktails, not to mention its eccentric reservation system and exacting rules of decorum. In a Manhattan bar world then ruled by glitz and noise, sloppy drinks and sloppy behavior, it served as … [Read more...] about Sasha Petraske, 42, Dies; Bar Owner Restored Luster to Cocktail Culture
This Mexican Chef Is Having a Very Good Year
SAN FRANCISCO — Gabriela Cámara is having a very good year. Five years after she moved to the United States from her native Mexico, she is at the tipping point of world culinary fame. Her 20-year-old restaurant, Contramar , is both a beloved institution and a power-lunch destination: the Union Square Cafe of Mexico City. Her San Francisco restaurant, Cala , has established her here as both an eloquent translator of modern Mexican food and an advocate for social justice: She provides health insurance and other benefits to all full-time employees, many of whom are recruited through job programs for the formerly incarcerated. A glowing documentary film about the restaurants, “A Tale of Two Kitchens,” executive-produced by the actor Gael García Bernal, premiered two weeks ago on Netflix. She has just published a cookbook, “My Mexico City Kitchen” ( Sqirl , whose casually fabulous cooking mirrors her own. And Council of Cultural Diplomacy , composed of people who bring … [Read more...] about This Mexican Chef Is Having a Very Good Year
