Jon Hale Louisville Courier Journal Published 4:36 PM EDT Oct 11, 2018 LEXINGTON, Ky. – Mark Stoops and previous Kentucky football coaches have to prepare for the question: What’s it like to coach football in the Southeastern Conference at a basketball school? Almost every year when UK takes its turn on the stage at SEC Football media days, the topic comes up. What is far less common is Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari fielding questions about the football program at his own media day. “Do you remember where two years ago we’d be sad and disappointed after a loss?” Calipari said Thursday when asked how he has enjoyed watching Stoops' 5-1 team. “Wasn’t no sad now. Everybody, their staff was mad, their players were mad, our fans were mad. The culture has changed now in football.” Calipari was referring to a text exchange he had with Stoops following the football team’s overtime loss at Texas A&M Saturday. Jon Hale Louisville Courier Journal Published 2:01 PM EDT Oct 11, 2018 LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky basketball coach John Calipari is open to the idea of returning the favor by appearing on Rick Pitino's new podcast. Pitino appeared on Calipari's now-defunct podcast in January 2017 while still coach at Louisville. Asked at UK's media day Thursday if he was already scheduled to go on Pitino's podcast, which is scheduled to premiere with an interview of Billy Donovan, Calipari said he is not but would probably be open to the idea. He said he has talked with Pitino a couple times since he was fired by Louisville. The two longtime coaching rivals will not be reuniting for one of Pitino's new speaking engagements with college basketball teams, though. "Probably wouldn’t have him come talk to the team based on it would put North Korea on the backburner," Calipari said with a laugh, referring to the media attention such a talk would elicit. "Let me just say … [Read more...] about UK Basketball: John Calipari open to Rick Pitino podcast
Jon Hale Louisville Courier Journal Published 8:34 AM EDT Oct 8, 2018 LEXINGTON – John Calipari has his answer ready. The criticism is not new, but it has seemingly popped up more regularly as Calipari’s Kentucky basketball program has failed to reach the NCAA Tournament’s final weekend in three consecutive seasons despite churning out first-round NBA draft picks. “When we won the (2012) national title, my wife, when I grabbed her, I said, ‘OK, that’s over now. We don’t have to deal with this anymore. They can’t say it,’” Calipari said in a recent interview with local reporters, referring to the former criticism his resume lacked a national championship. “Now the next thing is, ‘Well, you haven’t won enough. You should have won more. You’ve had all these kids, why haven’t you won more?’ “You’re right. I should be John Wooden. I should have won nine, 10, 11. … [Read more...] about Kentucky basketball: Should John Calipari have more titles?
Jon Hale Louisville Courier Journal Published 12:42 p.m. UTC Aug 15, 2018 LEXINGTON, Ky. – The bright lights of Kentucky’s basketball program figure to hold some allure for almost every major recruit in the country. After all, in the John Calipari era, 35 Wildcats have been selectsted in the NBA draft, including 26 in the first round and 12 in the top 10. But is it quite as simple for Calipari as taking his pick of the top five-star prospects each season? Calipari’s response to the first decommitment in his UK tenure and subsequent criticism from recruit DJ Jeffries’ father about how his staff handled that news suggests it is not. “You have to want this as bad as we want you,” Calipari said. “I am always looking for guys who have always dreamed of playing for Kentucky. Then I’ve got to find out if they’re good enough, because there may be 100,000 of those but there are only three or four that are really good enough to be here … [Read more...] about In their own words: How John Calipari’s assistants evaluate UK recruits
Mark Giannotto Memphis Commercial Appeal Published 10:50 p.m. UTC Jul 31, 2018 Corey Jeffries expected Kentucky fans to rip into his son on social. That’s the nature of the beast in recruiting when a player of D.J. Jeffries’ caliber announces he is no longer committed to a national powerhouse like Kentucky. That's exactly what D.J. Jeffries, a top-50 recruit from Olive Branch, Miss., did on Monday, becoming the first player to decommit from Kentucky since coach John Calipari arrived. What perhaps Corey Jeffries did not completely understand, at least not until his son dominated sports talk radio in Memphis and message boards from here to the Bluegrass state the past 24 hours, is how much this would stoke the fire of college basketball’s newest rivalry. Penny Hardaway vs. Calipari just got a lot juicier. And if Jeffries ends up picking Memphis, as many predict he will, watch out. “I think it’s about to be fun,” Corey Jeffries said. … [Read more...] about D.J.
