Catholic League President Bill Donohue said Monday that Joe Biden and his administration are “stoking the fire” of racism in America. On May 13, Biden gave the commencement address at Howard University, in which he lied to his black audience by telling them that white supremacy “is the most dangerous terrorist threat to the homeland,” Dr. Donohue asserts in Monday’s essay . Mr. Biden is doing the opposite of what he promised during his campaign, and instead of uniting the country, “he is dividing us along racial lines,” Donohue writes. Racism is kept alive by people like Biden and his administration who have “a vested ideological interest in stoking the fire,” he argues. Joe Zawinul, a classically trained Austrian pianist who achieved fame as a co-leader of the electrified jazz band Weather Report, died yesterday in Vienna. He was 75 and lived in Malibu, Calif. The cause was Merkel cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, said a spokesman for Heads Up International, his American record label. Mr. Zawinul had been hospitalized since last month. Weather Report, which Mr. Zawinul led with the saxophonist Wayne Shorter, was in the front ranks of the music that came to be called fusion. But he already had an impressive list of accomplishments before Weather Report recorded its first album in 1971, and he remained active and influential after the group disbanded in 1986. He first attracted worldwide attention as a member of the saxophonist Cannonball Adderley’s band, one of the most popular in jazz, from 1961 to 1970. After all, both parties were ostensibly opposed to a default. And raising the debt ceiling merely enables the Treasury Department to finance the spending Congress has already authorized. Democrats did not owe Republicans any concessions in exchange for their cooperation in preventing a financial calamity.
