BOSTON — In profile to the audience, her partner’s hands on her waist, the ballerina of George Balanchine’s “Diamonds” walks slowly forward on point. This celebrated passage occurs toward the end of their andante pas de deux, just as the third movement of Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony returns to its main melody, making us feel we are reaching the heart of matters. The ballerina, while plucking her way on those points, begins with her head, arms and torso stretched forward, then slowly lifts her torso until it is arched right back, her arms starting like folded wings and opening out, winglike again, to complete that backward arch. It’s a sequence in which a dancer, without addressing the audience, should draw us into her private drama. “Diamonds” is the final ballet of Balanchine’s “Jewels” trilogy (1967), and this phrase rings more bells than one.
