Pope condemns violence in Mexico after killing of 2 Jesuits
Pope Francis on Wednesday blasted the violence that plagues Mexico as he mourned the slayings of two of his “brother” Jesuits who were gunned down in a remote Mexican church by apparent drug gang members. Francis, an Argentine Jesuit, offered prayers to the Jesuit community at the end of his weekly general audience, saying he was “saddened and dismayed” to learn of the slayings in Mexico’s mountainous Chihuahua state. “How may killings there are in Mexico!” he said. “Once again, I repeat that violence never resolves problems but just increases useless suffering.” Javier Campos Morales, 79, and Joaquín César Mora Salazar, 80, were killed Monday inside the church in Cerocahui. A man being pursued by a drug gang had apparently sought refuge in the church, and the gang members killed him and the priests when they found him, authorities said. The Revs. Javier Campos, 79, and Joaquín Mora, 80, had spent much of their lives serving Indigenous peoples of the region. Authorities said they were shot to death in the small church on Cerocahui’s town square Monday, along with a tourist guide they tried to protect from a local criminal boss. Tourists are drawn to the area's imposing mountains, deep canyons and the indomitable Tarahumara Indigenous people, who refer to themselves as the Raramuri and are famed for their ability to run dozens of miles barefoot or in leather sandals. 19 children, 2 adults killed in Texas in the deadliest school shooting since Sandy Hook
UVALDE, Texas — A gunman walked into a school here Tuesday and killed at least 21 people, including 19 children, in another mass shooting in an America that daily buries victims of gun violence amid divisive political debates over 2nd Amendment rights and the gaze of disbelief from the outside world. Leer en español. The killings in this predominately Latino city were, as happens so often, the work of a lone man who took unsuspecting lives in a barrage of gunfire. Officials say Salvador Ramos, 18, carrying a rifle, entered Robb Elementary School in the working-class city of about 16,000 people approximately 80 miles west of San Antonio. “He shot and killed — horrifically, incomprehensibly,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said. A Border Patrol agent who works as part of a tactical team near the school, which is about 50 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, fired the shots that killed the gunman, according to a law enforcement source.
