Two bills in Delaware and Vermont are looking to remove the religious right of Catholic priests to withhold information given to them during a confession to protect children from abuse, but Catholic advocates argue that these bills will only harm the church. Lawmakers have argued that mandatory reporting must extend to everyone, including the Catholic church to fully protect children from abuse or neglect. “I haven’t seen any evidence that the seal of confession has impeded the prosecution of domestic abuse or child abuse, [and] as a mother of ten children, I am very serious when it comes to the safety of my children, so I do not want to downplay abuse …our church has had a terrible history of abuse,” Andrea Picciotti-Bayer, strategy consultant and media fellow at the IHE, mother of ten, and director of the Conscience Project, told the Daily Caller News Foundation. Two bills proposed by state elected officials would remove the Catholic Church’s right to the “seal of … [Read more...] about State Legislation Could Strip Catholic Churches’ Right To Protect Members ‘Sealed Confessions’

Save the Gowns!
The concept of museum-worthy clothes is arguably as old as museums themselves. But only in modern history did blockbuster fashion exhibits really take off. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art , the 2018 exhibition “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” drew some 1.6 million guests, according to the museum. “Romantic and Glamorous Hollywood Design,” an exhibition that opened in 1974, had about 780,000 visitors. Matthew Yokobosky , the senior curator of fashion and material culture at the Brooklyn Museum, which over the past two years has staged exhibits on the designers Christian Dior , Thierry Mugler and Virgil Abloh , said the interest in seeing clothes on display has risen as “the occasions for getting dressed up have diminished.” Preserving collections for posterity has not always been a priority in the fashion industry, which is focused heavily on the future (by the time that most brands’ spring clothes are released, they are already showing pieces … [Read more...] about Save the Gowns!
Review: In a New Yasmina Reza Play, a Superfan Becomes Celine Dion
“No realism,” the French playwright Yasmina Reza indicates twice in the opening pages of her new play “James Brown Wore Curlers,” which had its world premiere this past weekend in Munich. It’s a stage direction that the director Philipp Stölzl has taken to heart in his gently surreal production at the Residenztheater. The rotating stage is dominated by a wooden swing, a player piano and, most memorably, a gigantic fish: two halves of a trout, suspended high above the actors. The effect is weird, hilarious and, when fog issues in torrents from the fish’s mouth late in the performance, hallucinogenic. It turns out Reza and her director have a point. The non-naturalism of the staging helps the audience ease into the improbable plot, which tracks a French couple whose son goes from being a Celine Dion superfan to believing that he is the French Canadian pop diva herself. The premise is more outlandish than in Reza’s most celebrated works — the Tony-winning satires “ Art ” (1994) and … [Read more...] about Review: In a New Yasmina Reza Play, a Superfan Becomes Celine Dion

Game 1: Friday, March 24, at 7 p.m. The Wildcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning after a trio of hits. One batter later, second baseman Garen Caulfield singled up the middle and drove in left fielder Chase Davis, who walked earlier in the inning, to put the Wildcats up 2-0 early. Arizona starting pitcher TJ Nichols got two quick outs to start the bottom of the first inning. After being hit by a pitch on a full count, Sun Devil catcher Ryan Campos took first.
