The first-ever Celebrity Jeopardy! was almost destined for joke status. After all, the Saturday Night Live version of the famous people-only edition of the game show remains indelible, becoming one of SNL ’s more famous recurring sketches. But the real, hour-long show, which wrapped its 13-episode season on Thursday, ended up distinguishing itself as a worthy entry in the hallowed Jeopardy! canon . Better yet: It was easily one this TV season’s most consistently rewarding watches. Fellow celebrity nerd Mayim Bialik hosted this special primetime take on the show, which had a different format than a traditional half-hour Jeopardy! match. Instead of having contestants compete to rack up the most money for as many games as possible, Celebrity Jeopardy! had a more rigid structure: A bracket-style competition created unique stakes, with each round pitting three celebs against each other. Six starting rounds became three semifinals, as the contestants tried to … [Read more...] about ‘Celebrity Jeopardy!’ Winner Reveals His Secret Strategy—and Who He Didn’t Mean to Piss Off

Your Hate for Måneskin Is Their ‘Gasoline’
If Måneskin win the Grammy for Best New Artist this Sunday, they have no idea what they’ll do. They’ll probably act on instinct in the moment, they suppose—a strategy that has yet to fail them in more than seven years as a band. But if they lose? “If we lose, I don’t want to be like”—singer Damiano David screws up his faces and claps sarcastically like Nancy Pelosi at the 2019 State of the Union—“‘Oh, yeah, yeah, they deserved it.’” Victoria de Angelis cuts in, feeding off her bandmate’s energy. “If we lose,” she declares, “we jump on stage, push the person down, and—” The bassist grabs an imaginary mic and bends over it, screaming. Then she breaks character and leans back, unleashing a hoarse cackle. “I want [an] honest reaction,” David says. “Stop faking it, like, ‘OK, it doesn’t matter.’ Yeah, it fucking matters. Of course it matters.” With David and de Angelis speaking to The Daily Beast over Zoom while crammed together on a tiny couch alongside their … [Read more...] about Your Hate for Måneskin Is Their ‘Gasoline’
Russia Crimps Gas Flows Just as Europe Races to Stock Up for Winter
Germany’s largest storage chamber for natural gas stretches underneath a swath of farmland the size of nine soccer fields in the western part of the country. The bucolic area has become a kind of battlefield in Europe’s effort to defend itself against a looming gas crisis driven by Russia. Since last month, the German government has been rapidly pumping fuel into the vast underground site in Rehden, hoping to fill it in time for the winter, when demand for gas surges to heat homes and businesses. The scene is being repeated at storage facilities across the continent, in a jousting over energy between Europe and Russia that has been escalating since Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine in February. In the latest sign that Moscow appears intent on punishing Europe for sanctions and military support for Ukraine, Gazprom, the Russian state-controlled energy giant, last week cut by 60 percent the amount of gas it delivers via Nord Stream 1, a critical pipeline serving Germany and other … [Read more...] about Russia Crimps Gas Flows Just as Europe Races to Stock Up for Winter
U.S. to Boost Military Role in the Philippines in Push to Counter China
The United States is increasing its military presence in the Philippines, gaining access to four more sites and strengthening the Southeast Asian nation’s role as a key strategic partner for Washington in the event of a conflict with China over Taiwan. The agreement, announced on Thursday, allows Washington to station military equipment and build facilities in nine locations across the Philippines, marking the first time in 30 years that the United States will have such a large military presence in the country. The deal comes as Washington has tried to reaffirm its influence in the region amid a broader effort to counter Chinese aggression, reinforcing partnerships with strategic allies and bolstering relations that have soured in recent years. Fears have also grown over a possible Chinese invasion of Taiwan, the island democracy that China claims as its territory. Among the five treaty allies that the United States has in Asia, the Philippines and Japan are the most geographically … [Read more...] about U.S. to Boost Military Role in the Philippines in Push to Counter China

FROM the zany, slapdash comedy of ''National Lampoon's Animal House'' and ''The Blues Brothers,'' John Landis has graduated to the consummately slick entertainment that is ''Trading Places.'' This shrewd but very likable movie, more polished than Mr. Landis's others, is geared to a much wider audience than even the sizable ''Animal House'' crowd. It's a big, lavishly staged farce that … [Read more...] about AKYROYD IN ‘TRADING PLACES’
