In his first text messages from the life raft, he said he was in serious trouble. "Tommy this is no joke," he typed to his friend and fellow sailor Tommy Joyce. "We hit a whale and the ship went down." "Tell as many boats as you can," Rodriguez also urged. "Battery is dangerously low." On March 13, Rodriguez and three friends were 13 days into what was expected to be a three-week crossing from the Galápagos to French Polynesia on his 44-foot sailboat, Raindancer. Rodriguez was on watch, and he and the others were eating a vegetarian pizza for lunch around 1:30 p.m. In an interview with The Washington Post later conducted via satellite phone, Rodriguez said the ship had good winds and was sailing at about 6 knots when he heard a terrific BANG! GUILDERLAND, N.Y. — Standing outside the Guilderland Travel Plaza and waiving his right against self-incrimination, Ryan Lynch said what many drivers on the New York State Thruway have signaled for years: They can’t drive 65. “ I try and stay around 80,” said Mr. Lynch, 22, a student at Rochester Institute of Technology who was midway through a six-hour trek home to central Massachusetts on a recent afternoon. “People want to go where they’re going.” Mr. Lynch was just one of several motorists interviewed during a recent pit stop who said they liked the idea of a new state bill that would raise the speed limit on some of the state’s major highways to 70 miles per hour, a five m.p.h increase that would bring New York in line with many other states . Indeed, only a handful of states — including many of New York’s Northeastern neighbors — cap the limit at 65, something that Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara says doesn’t take into account major advances in automotive … [Read more...] about Is 70 M.P.H. the New 65? When Kelly Sullivan and Tommy Barkovic found out last July that she would be about 15 weeks pregnant for their September wedding, they knew they wanted to announce it in a big way. “Kelly was always interested in having a gender reveal as part of our baby process, and when we realized we had the wedding smack-dab in the middle with all the people that we care about there, we really tried to make that a two-for-one opportunity,” said Mr. Barkovic, 31, a financial director at a biotech company. At their wedding-day cocktail hour in front of about 110 guests in their hometown, Bedford, Mass., Mr. Barkovic wore a caddy outfit over his tan three-piece suit and Ms. Sullivan, who runs a geriatric nursing service and is an avid golfer, swung at a ball. It exploded into a pink puff to indicate a girl. “People were really touched and happy for us,” said Ms. Kelly, 32, who, a few years after recovering from thyroid cancer and learning that she had a genetic mutation that increased her … [Read more...] about Here Comes the … Baby Bump
