PROVIDENCE – Grow Smart Rhode Island announced the winners of its eighth annual Rhode Island Smart Growth Awards Friday. The awards will be presented at the Pavilion at Grace, 300 Westminster St. in Providence, on April 30. Former Mass. Gov. Michael S. Dukakis will be the keynote speaker. “Each year, passionate, creative and resourceful Rhode Islanders show us the way to tap our state’s full potential through projects, plans and policies that play to Rhode Island’s strengths and generate enduring economic benefits, both statewide and in specific neighborhoods,” stated Grow Smart Executive Director Scott Wolf. Tampa Bay's grocery scene is just about bursting, but that doesn't seem to worry Earth Fare CEO Frank Scorpiniti.The head of the North Carolina chain says up to 10 Earth Fare locations could be on their way to the Tampa Bay area over the next twoyears. The Collier County Planning Commission held its first public meeting Thursday to hear community input on the newest version of the Immokalee master plan and recommend further changes. Planning commissioners continued the meeting until Feb. 21 to resume a page-by-page review of the plan before making recommendations to the Collier County Commission. The plan provides a vision for the future of Immokalee that intertwines the community’s diversity, its significance as an agricultural hub, and the desire for revitalization and improvements to everything from roads to business facades and housing. Is Lowe's still considering being the "anchor" of this proposed complex? — Bob Foster, Naples A: A major commercial development with restaurants and retail stores, multifamily homes and a hotel are proposed for the former Pelican Nursery land on the southeast corner of Immokalee Road and Collier Boulevard. At least four distinctly different scenarios of master site plans for that more than 55 acres have been floated since the longtime nursery closed on that corner in spring 2017. Only one of the scenarios has included a home improvement store with a garden center. While early talk of a Home Depot or Lowe’s there was more than a rumor, the possibility has narrowed for one of these big-box stores to be a part of the project.
