The officer at the front desk of the LAPD’s Rampart station couldn’t understand the language the distraught mother and daughter were speaking. So he called over the intercom for help. As she listened to the mother speak, Officer Lucia McKenzie identified a familiar rhythm.“I said, ‘K’iche’?’ and she got super happy, a big smile on her face,” McKenzie said.K’iche’, spoken by Guatemalan Mayas, is one of many indigenous languages common in Los Angeles’ immigrant communities. Later this month, Los Angeles Police Department officers will begin carrying pocket cards that can help them identify an indigenous language and, if necessary, call an interpreter. The city is home to Mexicans who speak languages such as Zapotec, Mixtec and Triqui, as well as Guatemalan Mayas who speak languages like K’iche’ and Q’anjob’al. Pablo Sandoval makes history in Giants’ loss: pitching, homering, stealing
CINCINNATI — The Giants got pounded by the Reds on Monday, but Pablo Sandoval hit the trifecta. A steal of third in the second inning. A three-run homer in the sixth inning. And a scoreless relief stint in the eighth inning. Sandoval became the only other player besides Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson in 1905 with a homer, steal and scoreless pitching outing in the same game, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. “It was fun,” said Sandoval, who was summoned to pitch in the 12-4 loss to spare manager Bruce Bochy from making another bullpen move. “It was a tough loss. Whatever I can do to help this team. I’m going to be a man. I’m going to take a punch and sacrifice everything to help the bullpen to rest one more day.” San Francisco Giants' Pablo Sandoval hits a three-run home run off Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani in the sixth inning of a baseball game, Monday, May 6, 2019, in Cincinnati. Yes, the Rams’ C.J. Anderson is a little heavier. It’s that “man pregnancy weight.”
As a self-described “fat kid at heart,” C.J. Anderson is accustomed to some of the weight swings and changes that happen from time to time with his body shape. This time, though, his changed physique has attracted national attention — and the cause, according to Anderson, is different from the past. Cut by the Denver Broncos in April and by the Carolina Panthers and Oakland Raiders late in the 2018 regular season, the running back who helped Denver win Super Bowl 50 thought his season was over, only to land on Dec. 18 with the Los Angeles Rams, where he and Todd Gurley have formed a formidable twosome. Anderson helped carry the Rams when Gurley was out with a knee injury, and he remained a crucial part of the team’s offense last week, even with Gurley back on the field. And the 27-year-old can laugh now about those teams that gave up on him. “I’m just old and fat,” he joked after rushing for 123 yards and scoring two touchdowns in the … [Read more...] about Yes, the Rams’ C.J.
