Investigators have focused on possible negligence in the storage for six years of 2,750 tons of a highly explosive ammonium nitrate fertilizer inside a waterfront warehouse. The government ordered the house arrest of several port officials. The Port of Beirut and customs office is known as one of the most corrupt and lucrative institutions in Lebanon where various factions and politicians, including Hezbollah, hold sway.
