As Trade War Spreads to Mexico, Companies Lose a Safe Harbor

June 1, 2019 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

When trade tensions with China flared last year, many companies sought refuge in a country with a long, stable relationship with the United States: Mexico. Now, that alternative for production and materials may also be in jeopardy with President Trump’s threat to impose escalating tariffs on imports from Mexico, aimed at forcing action on illegal immigration. In the short term, the tariffs would mean lower profits for American importers and higher prices for American consumers on everything from avocados to Volkswagens. In the long run, they could force companies to reconsider the continent-spanning supply chains that have made North America one of the world’s most interconnected economies. That disruption, experts warn, could be far more damaging to the United States economy than the cost of tariffs themselves. The United States imported more than $345 billion in goods from Mexico last year, and shipped $265 billion the other way. But if anything, those numbers understate the … [Read more...] about As Trade War Spreads to Mexico, Companies Lose a Safe Harbor

Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 LAS VEGAS (AP) — Jay Kornegay was behind the counter in 2004 when someone approached with $5,000 to bet on the Super Bowl but had no idea how to decide. The man, not a regular sports bettor, thought for a few moments and decided to put it all on the Carolina Panthers to score exactly 29 points at 30-1 odds. Kornegay couldn't believe it, but took the man's money — and later returned it plus the winnings. The bet cashed when the Panthers scored that amount in a three-point loss to the New England Patriots. The Super Bowl draws a larger portion of casual bettors than other American sporting events, and the numerous proposition options each year underscore how the game's mass appeal goes well beyond professional gamblers and hardcore fans. “We’re certainly going to write a lot more tickets on the propositions than the game,” said Kornegay, vice president of race and … [Read more...] about Super Bowl prop betting increasing in popularity

27 Killed in South Sudan on Eve of Pope Francis Visit

February 3, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

South Sudan reported 27 people were killed in battles between cattle herders and insurrectionist militia fighters on Thursday, just one day before the scheduled arrival of Pope Francis during his tour of Africa. South Sudanese officials said fighters from a rebel militia, most likely the National Salvation Front (NAS), attacked a herding community in the Central Equatoria province, killing six people. The herding community also blamed the NAS. The herders retaliated later on Thursday, killing 21 civilians, including five children and a pregnant woman. 27 killed in revenge attack in South Sudan https://t.co/BbqH2CJErw #MonitorUpdates — Daily Monitor (@DailyMonitor) February 3, 2023 “The attack was a sheer revenge attack after an unknown armed group launched an assault on the camps in a hit-and-run mission.
