Home prices hit a new record high in the second quarter
(CNN) Despite rising mortgage rates that dampened sales, home prices continued to climb higher in the second quarter, with many more cities seeing double-digit price gains than in the first part of the year. The median single-family existing home price in the second quarter was $413,500 -- the first time this quarterly price has ever risen above $400,000, according to the latest quarterly report from the National Association of Realtors. Home prices for the quarter were up 14.2% from a year ago, slightly slower than the 15.4% year-over-year price increase experienced in the first quarter. A majority, 80%, of US metro areas saw double-digit home price increases last quarter, or 148 out of 185. That's up from 70% of cities in the first quarter. "Home prices have increased at a pace that far exceeds wage gains, especially for low- and middle-income workers," said Lawrence Yun, NAR's chief economist. Mortgage rates bounce back on strong employment and inflation data
After a brief dip below 5% for the first time in four months, the 30-year fixed rate shot above that level this week. According to the latest data released Thursday by Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate average jumped to 5.22% with an average 0.7 point. (A point is a fee paid to a lender equal to 1% of the loan amount. It is in addition to the interest rate.) It was 4.99% a week ago and 2.87% a year ago. Freddie Mac, the federally chartered mortgage investor, aggregates rates from about 80 lenders across the country to come up with weekly national averages. The survey is based on home purchase mortgages. Rates for refinances may be different. It uses rates for high-quality borrowers with strong credit scores and large down payments. Because of the criteria, these rates are not available to every borrower. The 15-year fixed-rate average climbed to 4.59% with an average 0.7 point. It was 4.26% a week ago and 2.15% a year ago. The five-year adjustable-rate average rose to … [Read more...] about Mortgage rates bounce back on strong employment and inflation data
Sharpton puts spotlight on Georgia woman’s patrol car fall
ATLANTA (AP) — The Rev. Al Sharpton demanded a full accounting of how a Georgia woman fell from a moving patrol car after her arrest, saying at her funeral Thursday that he would seek a Justice Department review of her case if the family didn't get answers. Brianna Grier, 28, suffered significant injuries on July 15 and died July 21 at an Atlanta hospital. Authorities had been called to her home in Sparta, Georgia, as she experienced a mental health crisis, a family attorney has said. Sparta is about 100 miles (160 kilometers) southeast of Atlanta. Sharpton, noting reports Grier was having what he called a “mental health episode,” said the issue was not what she was thinking, but what police were thinking. “She may have had an episode. What were they having that they had not secured who they arrested in the back of the cruiser,” he asked at the funeral service for Grier in Atlanta. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said deputies who put Grier in the back of a patrol car to … [Read more...] about Sharpton puts spotlight on Georgia woman’s patrol car fall
