A new era of austerity Shares in tech companies are in retreat after investors got sobering news on Thursday about three of the industry’s giants — Alphabet, Amazon and Apple — including slowing demand for everything from iPhones to digital ads to cloud services. “You’re hearing that from, I would think, everybody ,” Tim Cook of Apple said of the challenging environment on CNBC. That outlook is largely responsible for Nasdaq 100 futures being down 1.4 percent this morning, eroding Thursday’s big tech stock gains after investors hoped that the Facebook parent Meta had shown tech how to operate in leaner times. Plenty of headwinds are hitting the tech sector. Central bankers this week reiterated that they’re not done raising interest rates (even if market participants don’t fully believe it ). U.S. Stood By as Indonesia Killed a Half-Million People, Papers Show
BANGKOK — It was an anti-Communist blood bath of at least half a million Indonesians. And American officials watched it happen without raising any public objections, at times even applauding the forces behind the killing, according to newly declassified State Department files that show diplomats meticulously documenting the purge in 1965-66. In one of the documents , released on Tuesday , an American political affairs counselor describes how Indonesian officials dealt with prisons overflowing with suspected members of the Indonesian Communist Party, known by the acronym P.K.I. “Many provinces appear to be successfully meeting this problem by executing their P.K.I. prisoners, or by killing them before they are captured,” said the cable sent in 1965 from the American Embassy in Jakarta, Indonesia’s capital, to the State Department. Another cable describes how clerics from an influential Muslim organization in Indonesia advised their flocks that atheist “P.K.I. members are … [Read more...] about U.S. Stood By as Indonesia Killed a Half-Million People, Papers Show
Malcolm McLaren, Seminal Punk Figure, Dies at 64
Malcolm McLaren, an impresario, recording artist and fashion designer who as manager of the Sex Pistols played a decisive role in creating the British punk movement, died on Thursday in Switzerland. He was 64. The cause was mesothelioma, a cancer of the linings around organs, said Young Kim, his companion of many years. She said he had been under treatment at a Swiss hospital. He lived in Paris and New York. Mr. McLaren, a former art student, found an outlet for his ideas about fashion, music and social provocation in the inchoate rock ’n’ roll scene of London in the early 1970s. Operating from the clothing boutique Sex, which he and the fashion designer Vivienne Westwood ran, he brought together four obscure musicians, called them the Sex Pistols and provided them with an attitude suited to Britain in decline: nihilistic rage, expressed at high volume in songs like “Anarchy in the U.K.” and the vitriolic anti-anthem “God Save the Queen.” Mr. McLaren was a keen student of … [Read more...] about Malcolm McLaren, Seminal Punk Figure, Dies at 64

Golf in the elements: Hovland, Spieth brace for nasty conditions at Pebble
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 PEBBLE BEACH — Viktor Hovland grew up in Norway, played college golf at Oklahoma State and spent the past two weeks in Oklahoma, braving 30-degree temperatures to work on his game. So he can handle a little rain and wind at Pebble Beach. That’s the forecast for Saturday’s third round of the AT&T Pro-Am, especially in the afternoon. Tournament officials moved up tee times by one hour — the first group now goes off at 7:30 a.m. instead of 8:30 — in an effort to beat the worst weather. The winds are expected to reach gusts of 20 to 30 mph, a recipe for high scores at Pebble, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula’s Shore Course. Hovland, the world’s No. 11-ranked player, figures his recent preparation in Oklahoma gives him an edge. “If you can hit the ball well with a bunch of layers on, and know where the ball is going, that’s good practice for playing in tournaments with similar … [Read more...] about Golf in the elements: Hovland, Spieth brace for nasty conditions at Pebble
