When Some Turn to Church, Others Go to CrossFit
Ali Huberlie , a 27-year-old education consultant in Boston, awakens at 4:45 every morning to go to her CrossFit “box,” or gym, where she spends two hours. When she and her boyfriend, whom she met through CrossFit, went apartment-hunting, they chose a neighborhood near their box. This year, as a student at Harvard Business School, Ms. Huberlie wrote a case study about a founder of CrossFit that was incorporated into the school’s curriculum. And when Harvard Divinity School researchers were studying spaces other than churches that function as spiritual communities, they interviewed Ms. Huberlie. “CrossFit is family, laughter, love and community,” Ms. Huberlie told the researchers, who quoted her in their study, “How We Gather.” “I can’t imagine my life without the people I’ve met through it.” A for-profit gym franchise founded in 2000 that now has 13,000 licensed operators serving at least two million exercisers, CrossFit — like television, sports fandom and health fads — has … [Read more...] about When Some Turn to Church, Others Go to CrossFit

The Reigning Queen of Pandemic Yoga

T he last stranger Adriene Mishler hugged before the pandemic was a woman who may or may not have sideswiped her car. It was Friday, the 13th of March, and Mishler, a YouTube yoga celebrity with more than eight million subscribers, was driving back to her house in Austin, Texas. It was exactly a week after the city canceled the annual South by Southwest festival. A female driver in a tan or gold sedan scraped the side of Mishler’s vehicle and, instead of pulling over like a decent person, raced off. The yoga guru gave chase. “I was not going to chew them out,” Mishler said a few weeks later, reflecting on the incident. “I didn’t give a [expletive] about exchanging insurance or anything — well, obviously I did.” But that wasn’t the point of catching the driver. The point was to have a conversation with that person about the importance of goodness and accountability … [Read more...] about The Reigning Queen of Pandemic Yoga
A SoulCycle Instructor Got the Vaccine as an ‘Educator’
For Stacey Griffith, a New York City-based SoulCycle instructor whose highly sought-after spin classes are often studded with celebrities, securing a vaccine dose was simple enough: She filled out some paperwork, and on Friday made the hour drive from Manhattan to a coronavirus vaccination site on Staten Island. But after posting on Instagram about her vaccination — and telling a reporter from The Daily Beast that her role as a fitness instructor made her eligible for the vaccine as an educator — Ms. Griffith quickly became the subject of a ferocious backlash. On social media, commenters questioned how a famously fit 52-year-old was able to secure a place in line ahead of essential workers and at-risk seniors. Almost immediately, Ms. Griffith, who has since apologized, appeared to become the latest example of a wealthy or well-connected person gaining improper access to scarce vaccine doses. The outcry came as officials across the nation struggle to respond to racial and … [Read more...] about A SoulCycle Instructor Got the Vaccine as an ‘Educator’
