Yellen: 14th Amendment Can’t Be Appropriately Used to Raise Debt Ceiling
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that President Joe Biden can not invoke the 14th Amendment to address the debt ceiling under the current circumstances. Anchor Chuck Todd said, “Does the 14th Amendment fall under the category of extraordinary measures?” Yellen said, “Well, extraordinary measures is used in a different way, but there hasn’t been much discussion of the 14th Amendment, and as President Biden said, I believe this morning, it doesn’t seem like something that could be appropriately used in these circumstances given the legal uncertainty around it and given the tight timeframe we’re on. So my devout hope is that Congress will raise the debt ceiling and we will pay all of our bills.” Todd said, “Are you going to pay all of our debts and then let the court tell us we shouldn’t have if we breach the debt ceiling? I understand wanting to use it now, but are we really going to sit there and let bills go unpaid and not even trying this?” … [Read more...] about Yellen: 14th Amendment Can’t Be Appropriately Used to Raise Debt Ceiling
Atlanta comedian uses humor in caring for mom with Alzheimer’s
Janay Smith has had careers in law and the corporate world, but nothing prepared her to be a caregiver for her mother. In 2012, Smith, 52 an only child, lost her father, Jock M. Smith, who was a law partner of Johnnie Cochran’s, a professor and judge and who was a noted collector of sports memorabilia. Soon, after her father died of a heart attack, Smith started noticing changes in her mother’s memory and behavior. Perhaps it’s just grief, friends and family said. Smith, though, suspected it was more. Doctors later confirmed it was Alzheimer’s disease. Until her diagnosis, Yvette Smiley-Smith was a CPA who also owned and operated an expert witness consulting firm . Now she needed to be reminded to go to the bathroom. “It was pure hell,” said Smith. “I never experienced anything like that. I’ve never seen a movie or TV show or podcast to this day that describes what I felt.” She was in disbelief that her mother’s progression was so steep and fast. “There was no … [Read more...] about Atlanta comedian uses humor in caring for mom with Alzheimer’s
Bioré apologizes after using TikToker who survived school shooting to promote pore strips
Skincare company Bioré and influencer Cecilee Max-Brown have apologized for a recent partnership post after backlash over the video's references to a school shooting. Max-Brown posted a sponsored TikTok on Thursday in support of Bioré's campaign for Mental Health Awareness Month. In the video, she shared her experience with anxiety after going into lockdown on campus during the shooting at Michigan State University in February. She also showed off a box of Bioré pore strips and encouraged viewers to "get it all out, not only what's in your pores but most importantly what's on your mind, too." "I found myself recently struggling from seeing the effects of gun violence firsthand," Max-Brown said in the video. "I've had to intentionally set aside time for prioritizing my mental health. I will never forget the feeling of terror that I had walking around campus for weeks in a place I considered home." Max-Brown graduated from Michigan State University last month and … [Read more...] about Bioré apologizes after using TikToker who survived school shooting to promote pore strips
‘The Wire’ Creator David Simon: ‘I’d Rather Put a Gun in My Mouth’ Than Use A.I.
Left-wing Hollywood writer David Simon, who created the HBO series The Wire , said he will refuse to use artificial intelligence technology to write his scripts, though he doesn’t have a problem if other writers want to experiment with it. In an interview with NPR’s “Consider This” podcast, David Simon drew a hard line between himself and A.I. “I’d rather put a gun in my mouth,” than use A.I. to assist in writing scripts, he said, later adding: “I don’t think A.I. can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.” A.I. has emerged as major point of contention between striking Hollywood writers and the studios. Many writers fear they will either be eliminated or reduced to polishing scripts generated by A.I. applications. Some also fear their original scripts will be used by studios as A.I. fodder to generate similar content. Simon said that would qualify as a “fundamental violation of the integrity of writers and also copyright.” “When I sold all … [Read more...] about ‘The Wire’ Creator David Simon: ‘I’d Rather Put a Gun in My Mouth’ Than Use A.I.
