(CBS DETROIT) – A man has been arrested after fatally assaulting a co-worker at the General Motors Orion Assembly Plant early on Thursday morning, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies were dispatched to the plant, located at  455 Giddings Road in Orion Township at about 1:37 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 11, responding to reports of an injured person. Deputies tried to perform CPR, but they could not revive him, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. (CBS DETROIT) – A proposed initiative seeking to overturn Detroit’s adult-use cannabis licensing ordinance was shot down by The Detroit Election Commission. Although the city charter states that 2,811 signatures are needed to secure a ballot spot, 6,475 signatures are required under the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act. (CNN) In an attempt to slash the wide-ranging impacts of plastic pollution , California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law the country's most sweeping restrictions on single-use plastics and packaging on Thursday, the same day the Supreme Court limited the Environmental Protection Agency's ability to tackle the worsening climate crisis. The law requires that single-use packaging and plastic single-use food serviceware be recyclable or compostable by 2032. It also requires by 2032 a 25% reduction in the sales of plastic packaging and for 65% of all single-use plastic packaging to be recycled. And it establishes an accountability group, which will include industry representatives, to run a new recycling program overseen by the state.
