Leury García comes through in the 9th, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 1-0 win against the San Francisco Giants
Leury García came up with the go-ahead run at second base and two outs in the top of the ninth. The Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants were scoreless. The Sox second baseman had one thing on his mind. “Bring the guys in,” he said. García did just that, knocking in Adam Haseley with a single to right to lead the Sox to a 1-0 victory Friday night. Haseley scored just ahead of Mike Yastrzemski’s throw as the Sox won the opener of the three-game series in thrilling fashion in front of 35,266 at Oracle Park. “I know (reliever Camilo Doval) is a pretty good pitcher,” García said. “Everybody knows that. He’s got pretty good stuff. I tried to put the ball in play and drive the guys in.” García picked the perfect time for his biggest hit of the season. “That was good, a good game,” García said. “We got the W.” García entered Friday with a .193 batting average and 12 RBIs in 54 games. He went 2-for-4 Friday. “He’s been better lately, just got to watch, watch his … [Read more...] about Leury García comes through in the 9th, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 1-0 win against the San Francisco Giants
Why Nobody Should Want to Play for New York
And it’s not just about demanding fans. Photo: Erick W. Rasco/Sports Illustrated via Getty Images Until the Mets reportedly settled on former Angels general manager Billy Eppler as their new general manager Monday night, we had reached the point of their Mets’ desperate search for a GM that if you had not personally received an invitation to interview, they must have had your old number. As many as 12 different candidates for the job refused to even meet with the Mets, and their inability to find someone to fill what should, theoretically, be one of the most desired jobs in the sport (there are only 30 general managers in the Majors, after all) had become one of baseball’s running jokes. Though considering someone needs to be in charge of all the offseason moves the team clearly needs to make — assuming baseball’s looming labor fight doesn’t wipe out the offseason all together — you can forgive Mets fans for not laughing. There are an abundance of reasons that the Mets had … [Read more...] about Why Nobody Should Want to Play for New York
Slaughter Beach reaches ecotourism enthusiasts
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 SLAUGHTER BEACH, Del. (AP) — As many Delawareans flock to Rehoboth and Dewey beaches this time of year, one of the state’s lesser-known coastal towns is experiencing revived tourism. For some, Slaughter Beach’s horseshoe crabs, red knots and other wildlife win out over shopping, the boardwalk and nightlife. A town with only two businesses, the northern Sussex County spot is experiencing an uptick in visitors interested in ecotourism, according to Mayor Bob Wood, who said its popularity is unlike anything he has seen since he’s lived there. Mayor Wood, originally from Baltimore, bought a Slaughter Beach house with his wife in December 1999, vacationing at the home before moving there permanently in 2016. He said that, though the town has been gentrified over the years, the recent boost of ecotourists mirrors an early boom in the area’s history. He hearkened back to … [Read more...] about Slaughter Beach reaches ecotourism enthusiasts
The Women Who Leave Anti-Abortion Picket Lines to Get Abortions
A few days before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last month, a woman who described herself as an anti- abortion activist showed up in the waiting room of Dr. Marissa Lapedis, a family-medicine doctor who performs the procedure in Atlanta . But she wasn’t there to protest—she had an appointment. “She talked about being in marches, and said she had spent a lot of time volunteering in crisis pregnancy centers—you know, showing patients the ultrasound image and explaining what happens,” Lapedis, a fellow with the group Physicians for Reproductive Health , told The Daily Beast. “She said she had been anti-abortion her whole life, and that her whole family was like her—and yet she was so appreciative of the care she received from us. She literally was like, ‘I’m so grateful that I’m able to make this choice for myself.’” Lapedis’ experience is remarkable in part because she resides in a state with a looming ban on the procedure after six weeks—though the law has so … [Read more...] about The Women Who Leave Anti-Abortion Picket Lines to Get Abortions
Bezos’ Latest Project Could Be a Pain in the Ass for Renters
From the outside, it is a remarkably plain three-bedroom home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Nicknamed “ The Peanut ,” it is 15 years old, fronted with brick, and within shouting distance of the Tuscaloosa Nazarene Church. If that house of prayer isn’t of interest, there are at least another 19 within 4 miles. The Peanut is notable because of its owners—all 251 of them. Together, they pooled their funds this year to buy, and then rent, the $215,000 property, putting in as little as $100 apiece. The deal was facilitated by Arrived Homes, a startup that has raised more than $160 million in funding and debt financing, including two infusions from Jeff Bezos ’ personal investment arm, Bezos Expeditions, and at least one from Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and Salesforce billionaire Marc Benioff’s investment fund. Its goal is to give retail investors access to the lucrative rental market, mimicking the institutional investors that have spent tens of billions of dollars snapping up … [Read more...] about Bezos’ Latest Project Could Be a Pain in the Ass for Renters
