Belarus would be willing to host Russian tactical nuclear weapons on its territory to strengthen its defense capabilities in response to what it sees as security threats from Western nations amid the war in Ukraine, the country’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement reported by the state news media on Tuesday. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia had said in an interview broadcast on national television on Sunday that he would be able to position tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus , a close ally, by the summer. Although analysts said the claim was likely bluster, it underscored the Kremlin’s willingness to use nuclear saber-rattling in an attempt to put pressure on Ukraine’s allies to back down from their support of Kyiv. Belta, Belarus’s state news agency, reported that the country’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Tuesday in support of Mr. Putin’s move. It said that in recent years Belarus had been “subjected to unprecedented political, economic and information … [Read more...] about Belarus says it’s willing to host Russian nuclear weapons to counter a perceived Western threat.

Tornado-spawning storms may get worse due to warming
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 11 America will probably get more killer tornado- and hail-spawning supercells as the world warms, according to a new study that also warns the lethal storms will edge eastward to strike more frequently in the more populous Southern states, like Alabama, Mississippi and Tennessee. Students Receive Subsidized Studies in Hungary — for a Price
BUDAPEST — Daniel Szabo and Gergo Birtalan are both optimistic about their job prospects in their native Hungary, which has a low unemployment rate for college and university graduates. But the two Hungarian students are in totally different situations. When Mr. Szabo, 24, graduates soon from law school, he will be free to go wherever in the world he wants. But Mr. Birtalan, 18, was required to sign a contract at the beginning of his first year as a sociology major because of a new rule introduced in September. As a beneficiary of the state-funded university system, he will be obliged to work for two years in Hungary for every year of his subsidized studies. Such contracts, the only ones of their kind in Europe, have met with broad opposition and street protests from both high school and university students. If Mr. Birtalan finishes a typical three-year degree, his movements will be restricted for six years after graduation, when he will be in his late 20s, or even older if he … [Read more...] about Students Receive Subsidized Studies in Hungary — for a Price
Los Angeles’s Thriving Jazz Scene Produces Four New Albums
New York remains the popular and commercial center of jazz, but other cities are increasingly dictating its development . Young musicians in places like Philadelphia and Chicago — where systems for intergenerational exchange still thrive outside academia — are marrying established regional patois with a broad base of influences from across the black musical canon, and around the globe. That’s borne out particularly in Los Angeles, where the saxophonist Kamasi Washington has led the charge onto the national scene. He has famously collaborated with Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg, but two years ago, when he released a lauded triple-album, “The Epic,” he threw back the curtain on a crop of young jazz-trained musicians that hail from his hometown. The album featured a string section, a 20-person choir and a loose collective calling itself the West Coast Get Down. This winter, four members of that crew released solo albums of their own — most of them recorded in the same … [Read more...] about Los Angeles’s Thriving Jazz Scene Produces Four New Albums
