(CNN) Prosecutors in Memphis, Tennessee, will review all cases that involved the five officers charged in the brutal beating death of Tyre Nichols during a traffic stop, the district attorney's office said, as newly released documents show a sixth officer involved in the encounter lied in his statements to investigators. "The office will review all prior cases -- closed and pending," Shelby County District Attorney Steven Mulroy said in a statement. It is unknown how many cases this will involve. "This is just the beginning," Erica Williams, the spokeswoman for Mulroy, told CNN. "This involves any criminal case that [the officers] were involved in. Oakland’s new prosecutor tests voters’ views of crime and punishment
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 OAKLAND, Calif. - For more than a decade, the district attorney for Alameda County, where this city is the center of gravity, prosecuted crime the old-fashioned way, with stiff sentences and the reliable support of law-enforcement unions at election time. That changed sharply in November. Nancy O'Malley, the incumbent, declined to seek reelection amid the strengthening national push to reexamine who is punished and for how long. In her place, voters chose Pamela Price, a civil rights lawyer, who four years and a pandemic earlier had lost her challenge to O'Malley. Now, a woman who made a living taking on the local justice system is running it. "They elected me with a mandate," Price, the first Black woman to serve as Oakland district attorney, said in an interview. "And, to me, the right prosecutor for the moment is one who is not wedded to the status quo." Price … [Read more...] about Oakland’s new prosecutor tests voters’ views of crime and punishment
White House Letter; Run, George, Run, But Not Too Fast
President Bush arrived at his 1,600-acre ranch here close to 1 a.m. on Saturday, when he crawled in next to the first lady -- ''she'll be the lump in the bed next to me,'' he memorably said to 800 political donors in Burlingame, Calif., on Friday afternoon -- then got up later in the day to continue his rehabilitation work on a sports injury that has slowed the first runner. Mr. Bush, who also used the weekend to rest between multimillion-dollar fund-raisers for his re-election campaign, has been suffering from a minor muscle tear in his calf for two and a half months. His running times have suffered, too. A president who once averaged a 6:45 mile over three miles -- an unusually strong showing for a 56-year-old -- is now loping along at eight- and nine-minute miles, interspersed with walking. And for the first time, he is warming up before hitting the treadmill or the White House track. ''When he used to go running, he would just run without stretching,'' said Ari Fleischer, the … [Read more...] about White House Letter; Run, George, Run, But Not Too Fast
